Suspension bounce/buck

'01 250 SD ext cab 8' box - highway speed on concrete is a harsh ride much of the time creates a bucking bounce much like a rocking horse type of ride that some times can even get a little violent. It seems that this might be common on this wheelbase but is there something I can do to help this out? This problem causes a high pitched squeeling noise in my right ear when I am not alone......(wife).

What about leveling or short lift? Will this help this and what recommendations do you all have?

Thanks....craig

You can make some changes to your springs, but are you talking about how it rides loaded or unloaded? Better shocks can help a bit.

I find that rear leaf springs don't have much travel before they land on the overload leaf (heavy leaf on the bottom). If you can determine that you are hitting the overload, you might consider addding some light rolling lobe air springs to the rear axle. Inflated to mild pressure, they could lift the back enough to get a bit more travel.

I usually remove the overload leaf and replace it with a spacer, then add air springs. This gives me better suspension compliance when running unloaded. I increase the air spring pressure for loads. This works great for moderate payloads as I rarely ever carry significant weight.

If you do carry heavy, the overload leaf is needed, so perhaps you can add an auxilliary leaf to your rear spring stack to gain some travel for running unloaded.

Thanks for the reply. This problem shows when running empty. I had 2500 lbs in the box a while back and it rode like a dream through the same spots in the roads that make it buck when empty. Not only that but it was still just off of the overloads. Now that's haulin!

My 2000 f250 was like that when I bought it in 06. Dips in the highway would really cause it to bounce around. I replaced the factory shocks with bilsteins and it made a big improvement. The bilsteins will not soften the ride much but it will have a lot more control.
