Exclamation 03 Exp EB Please help

I have an 03 Exp EB that is making noises and am hoping you guys can help me out. If have it in 2WD there is what sounds like LOUD road noise. If I switch to A4WD the noise goes away. Since it goes away in A4WD it can't be road noise. If I do the switch while driving down the road, there is a loud clunking noise. Gas mileage sucks in A4WD so I would like to be able to drive it in 2WD. Also, if you switch the selector to 4Lo the light doesn't come on anymore. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I am hoping it is an easy fix that my hubby can take care of since this car is a major sore spot for him. If you remember back, this is the one the dealer did as a swap for my 99 that they totalled.

Thanks!!!

It sounds like a bearing going bad in the front differential. When you're in 2H, the front axle rotates within the ring gear of the differential. Once you switch out of 2H a vacuum actuator pulls in and locks the axle to the ring gear and starts rotating it with the axle. Since the ring gear and axle are now locked together, the bearing between the two components no longer rolls, hence no noise.

But does it mechanically shift into 4L and just no light, or does it not shift into 4L at all?

Not sure. I was afraid to try to test it on dry pavement.

Yeah, we hate the thing. Never had any problems with the 99.

Knowing whether or not it does will help with the diagnosis.

Just wondering, alloro, should the mileage be any different in A4wd as compared to 2wd? I didn't think anything changed unless excess wheel spin was detected at the rear. I going to re-read that long 4wd post again.

Am I hurting it more by driving in A4WD all the time?

No, A4wd is fine to drive in. I used to most of the time. It should not affect your mileage (never affected mine) either unless there is some kind of malfunction and it is actually engaging 4wd instead.

Some but not much. Even in 2H the front axle turns. The difference when you switch out of 2H to A4WD is that now the carrier assembly in the front differential turns, as well as, the front driveshaft. Turning those does add some load to the engine output, and any additional load will cut into your MPG.

After 119k miles and experiments with A4WD off and on, I've never seen an appreciable difference. Certainly nothing to support "mileage would suck"

Now if you use straight 4WD instead of 2H or A4WD, then your MPG would drop significantly.
