Some but not much. Even in 2H the front axle turns. The difference when you switch out of 2H to A4WD is that now the carrier assembly in the front differential turns, as well as, the front driveshaft. Turning those does add some load to the engine output, and any additional load will cut into your MPG.
I had a similiar issue with my '03 Expy FX4, i'd be driving down the road and a very loud grinding/roar would come from the front. Mine ended up being the driver's side vaccum-actuated hub. My service dealer told me on the Expys, the vaccum at the hub is always on, it's when you turn it into A4WD or 4HI or 4LO when the vaccum turns off (I guess different from the F150's), and that is what "locks" the front end in. Mine cost about $100 for the hub actuator.
I have an 03 Exp EB that is making noises and am hoping you guys can help me out. If have it in 2WD there is what sounds like LOUD road noise. If I switch to A4WD the noise goes away. Since it goes away in A4WD it can't be road noise. If I do the switch while driving down the road, there is a loud clunking noise. Gas mileage sucks in A4WD so I would like to be able to drive it in 2WD. Also, if you switch the selector to 4Lo the light doesn't come on anymore. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I am hoping it is an easy fix that my hubby can take care of since this car is a major sore spot for him. If you remember back, this is the one the dealer did as a swap for my 99 that they totalled.
Thanks!!!
Update:
Hubby took it to a repair shop yesterday. The guy says that he thinks it is the motor on the side of the transfer case that pulls it in and out of 4WD, does that make any sense to you guys. From some of your posts it seems like that is supposed to be vacuum acivated????
I just have trust issues with this mechanic. He is a friend of my husband's but when they went out for a road test to hear the noise. They stopped at another shop to get another opinion twice before they came back to tell me what they thought it was.
What fluids do you use to change tthe fluid in the transfer case? He told us to buy some from the local Chevy dealer. Does that make sense to you guys?
