I'm not a mind reader and my crystal ball is in the shop.

The tarot cards aren't telling me anything, and the tea leaves dried up and blew away.

And...I'm not psychic.

In order to answer this question...I have to ask another.

What the is this tilt steering column ACTUALLY from?

I will do one thing for you...I know the seller and have his phone number. I will call him and ask what the he!! is going on.

btw: I've already spent over 4 hours researching this issue, and found you SIX of the correct obsolete couplers NOS.

What did the seller do for you besides take your money?

Contact Green Sales Co. in Cincinnati OH for assistance (513-731-3304).

This is the largest obsolete parts vendor on the planet, the employees are all ex Ford partsmen.

Maybe someone will recognize what the shaft is from.

(sigh)

The part WOULD work if you had the correct steering shaft.

That's the problem...it's obvious...you do not have the correct shaft.

Did you see what I typed above? I don't know of anyone else that can help you.

You need someone that can look at that shaft and tell you what's it from...I'm stuck, because the parts catalog only shows a general pic.

You are correct that quite a few parts differ between tilt/fixed columns.
I understood what you meant. lol.

The only thing I can think of to help you further is try a coupler from a late 60's T' Bird. Which is a crap shoot, and you will probably lose.

Or

Try to get your money back.

The seller told him that...Nomad couldn't find one.

However...there are two different couplings used on these Birds...one was used with Ford P/S, another with Saginaw P/S.

Ford P/S: Fits 1967/71 Bird's // Saginaw: 1969/71 Birds and 1969/74 LTD's.

I already searched for these...no Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

solution maybe

Look up Borgeson or Flaming River. Borgeson in particular has a big selection of rag joints.

Another possible solution is a u-joint from above said companies. Rag joints aren't absolutely necessary. Heck, my highboy doesn't have one from the factory.

Non-tilt sounds easier at this point, huh? Basically subscribing to see if you get a fix to this. No t-birds around here in yards as far as I know or I'd go look for you.

EDIT:

Maybe these guys can help http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/pts/1056926490.html

I see a possible solution. Get TWO rag joints with the spline count and size you need, take one apart, turn the flange around and bolt it to the other one. Fab a safety interlock plate.

Use Ford nuts and bolts, they are the best ones for the application.

It would be NO DIFFERENT in strength then the original assembly. The safety interlock is the issue. Very easy to fab a good one though. Duplicate the safety interlock feature of the flanged end of your non tilt column but give it the bolt pattern of the new coupler and bolt it on. You may be able to cut the safety interlock off of your old column and modify it to fit.

According to the seller, who I spoke with on the phone last night, the Tilt Steering column you bought is CORRECT for a 1978/79 F100/350 with A/T.

You need two parts to install it.

There is a shaft & flange that slides over the splines of the steering shaft and is secured by a thru bolt & nut.

This flange was only used on 1978/79 F100/350 2WD models and 1978/81 Econolines, both with Tilt.

The steering coupler (rag joint) bolts to this flange then to the input shaft of the P/S gearbox.

D8TZ3A528A .. Steering Shaft & Flange Assy / Obsolete.

Fits: 1978/79 F100/350 2WD with Tilt Column.

Fits: 1978/81 Econoline with Tilt Column.

I searched for a NOS part, no Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

Yeah I Know Bill, I'm having to have it Custom made by Borgerson Universal, its the right part but its so rare are hard to find that used ones are selling for more then a after market column go for..
So I'm going to be out allot money once this is said and done.
Oh well, live and learn and never trust some body selling parts that's not a reputable business..
Also I can't get PMs any more..
Thanks Bill.
