I've got a early 99 f350. I'm looking to deciede between a 4" or 5" straight exhaust. I've read that 5 is somewhat overkill but I like the sound from what I've heard on youtube. So what exhaust would y'all recomend 4 or 5
Not real sure. I still have stock. And my saw ready to hack off the muffler. I believe either way you should change out you up pipes also,From what i under stand. Also don't mean to bounce you to another thread, But refer to post 20 on some incite that i just noticed that might help answer you question. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...hat-first.html
go with the 5" straight piped and dont look back. I even went as far as to put a 6" tip on mine. The sound is not really that bad. I love the sound of my truck especially around town. The turbo sound off the buildings is pretty cool. If you go with the 4" you will always wonder about the 5".
Performance wise, you won't get an increase with the 5" but it does have a deeper tone to it when running down the road. The 5" can be a little harder to install and you have to watch clearances such as the transmission cross member closer than the 4" or you can get some rattle and tapping going on. I am sure that you would be happy with either one.
Guzzle's right. From teh exhaust folks I've talked to and the tech articles I've read, the 5" won't offer any performance gains until you cross the 400 horsepower barrier. That said... those who have the 5" systems love them and call themselves the "cannon club".
I have the 5 inch and i was in the same boat as you when i was trying to decide. But i just went ahead with the straight piped 5'' with a 6 inch tip. I love the sound and i am glad i went with the 5 in

When you get it hashed out which sound you think you want let me know and I will get you a great price
In my Ex, I installed the 4 in because the downpipe was going to be 4 in. As such, even if you installed a 8 in exhaust, what would it do? Your restriction is the turbo outlet which is 4 in. IMO, adding a larger exhaust without taking out the restriction is just plain ricey. Kinda like the kids with a fart pipe and 1 in of an exhaust going into it.
