Cleaning the IAC didn't have any effect on the idle problem. I'll replace it with a new one and see if that helps. Otherwise I'm open to what else might be causing the problem. I have a friend who owns a Ford van with the same 5.8 ltr engine. He had exactly the same problem I'm having only his was worse. His would idle at 2500 to 3000 and not go away with a restart. He ended up changing the cam position sensor in the distributor. He got a different distributor out of a salvage yard, and that fixed the problem. At least that's what he called it. I replaced the throttle position sensor a few years back when the cruise control got jumpy to solve that problem. I don't have a lot of confidence that the IAC replacement will solve this problem. Why does it only act up after I drive it 50 plus miles and get good and warm? What do you think?
Thanks.

Reason: Another thought crept into my little brain.
Any chance you know somone else who has the same truck or at least similar, so that you could try a known working IAC. You said that the IAC had a lot of build up. Did it appear to operate smoothly once cleaned. Not sure that would have any bearing as perhaps the electrical part went after the unit stopped functioning mechanically. On the bright side...the IAC's are not overly expensive. You may be right though in thinking that it will not solve your problem. Since you can turn it off and restart and it will idle fine, tells me it is something else.
I wish I could tell you what, but I am at a loss as well.
Let us know when you figure it out though.
