I have a 96 F250 w/ the 460 engine. Recently, I can hear a pretty loud "whistle" that seems to be coming from the air intake system. It might not be a whistle, anyway, it only happens when the engine is idling. As soon as I give any throttle, it goes away. Anyone have an idea what this sound is? It's very annoying plus not knowing what it is gives me no comfort.
Thanks in advance for any help ! !
Sounds like a vacuum leak or an intake leak. I'd start by checking all your vacuum lines, then all the gaskets between the air filter box and the cylinder heads.
I'm not as familiar with the 460 but my 351W was making a low pitched whistling sound when I would first start it and the problem turned out to be that the EGR crossover tube was corroded and rotten. I could also hear an exhaust leak which was caused by the same thing. I replaced the tube and valve and now all is good.
I just posted a thread asking about this very problem. I have a 96 F350, 4x4, 460, E4OD.
There is a 5/8" hose going from the intake manifold (just below the throttle body) back towards the air cleaner. The hose has a small plastic cannister in-line. When you hear the humming/horn noise feel the cannister, it will be vibrating. I am not sure of the fix, but there is a thread about this and it was suggested to pinch the hose down resistrciting flow through the hose.
If you come up with anything, please post. Hope this helps.
