Well i think that i know where iam going to get the rebuild kit from, it is on Ebay and it is $175. My question is how hard are these to rebuild? I called a local shop here and they told me that they just replace the turbos becasue it is easier and it only costs $900 for the turbo. I dont know if i believe them. The truck that i have has 158k miles and i dont think that the turbo has ever been rebuilt. Is there any how to threads on rebuilding these?
You can get a rebuild kit on Ebay for $95 with free shipping! And they are super simple to rebuild... there is a how-to here. Its for the van turbo, but the stock turbo is basically the same.
Your turbo is probably fine, what you need to do is the CCV mod. These trucks take the crank case gases and vent them into the intake just before the turbo... the result is the oily crap like you are seeing, softened intercooler boots, and oil in the intercooler which decreases efficiency. The CCV mod takes these gases and either vents them to atmosphere or into a catch can. Tons of info here on the CCV mod, do a quick search. Riffraff performance just released a nifty kit to do this also- worth looking into.
Take the intake off the turbo housing, grab the nut on the wheel, see if you have any side to side play. A little play here is good as long as it's not touching the housing. Try to push pull in and out, there should be no play doing this. If all is good, then do the ccv mod for a clean engine.
