i would like to run my 99 on the tow/performance setting most of the time, b/c i dont pull a lot with it. i would just like to get better fuel milage. it is stock, besides the chip and filter. i have had a lot of people around me saying leave it on safe tow b/c the truck will last longer. i am also worried about what affects it might have on the tranny, it seems to shutter everyonce in awhile. just wanted some opintions on the matter, i dont know what size fuel tank that i have, i think it is the 29 gallon, but i am lucky to get 380 miles out of the tank. new air filter, fuel filter, and i use additive to it everytime i fuel up. thanks.
The most reliable and reasonably priced set up for my money is the isspro 3 gauge set. Click here:
You definitely want to get an exhaust gas temp gauge along with the other 2 you mention. Diesel Manor has great customer service and their directions that come in the kit are fantastic.
I ran the Superchip for many years. I would leave it in Performance when not towing, if I was to tow under 6,000lbs I would put it in tow performance, if I towed more then 6,000lbs I would put it in tow safe. Never had a problem and never had gauges before I got the DP-TUNER.
These are the gauges I have now and they work great. click here I would get the Pyro, trans, and boost.

You need to post what kind of air flow, exhaust etc you have done and what kind of programmer, chip you have, if air flow and exhaust has been improved you can get better mileage on highest setting's most of the time it's something you have to play around with. Get a EGT gauge a least before you play with different setting's
so basically until i get the money for the right gauges, i just need to leave it in safe tow, i am pretty sure i am only getting around 13 mpg, my 02 gets better than that.
i was checking them out, most seem to be around 400 bucks for the set of 3, is that the cheapest out there?
It's not the cheapest, but it is by far the most complete and reliable set-up out there. There are some cheaper gauges that you can get from eBay called Glowshift, but they absolutely suck by every account I have read but one, and you tend to get what you pay for in this area. My advice is always to just save the money up and do it right the first time. You don't want to skimp on something as important as this in my opinion.

Truthfully concurred. I am in the process of looking for gauges but I also don't want to pay an arm and a leg. Although I have decided that I better just go with what I want and enjoy it then worrying about the money and not be able to really see what my engine is doing (IE Cheap gauges like glowshift)
