I have a 2004 F150 ext cab 4x4 150,000 miles. I have a universal joint going bad on the rear drive shaft ( maybe both?). I contacted NAPA and Auto Zone, they told me it was a dealer part? I conatcted FORD, they give me a price for each U joint of $160! Today I called Advance Auto, they said they could get two of them for $190. Why is the other places saying they cant get them? will these work from Advanced Auto? are they tougher to change than the typical u joints? why are they so costly? PLEASE HELP....THANKS!
Thats because the you don't just press them out there is a tool in the kit to cut the dimples that hold the ujount in place there is not a c clip like back in the day. I'ts all most better money to buy the complete drive shaft assambly with the updated slip yok to stop the common drive line clunck.
just for the record,,,i know Ford went back to the std c-clip retainers sometime in mid 05(?) because scrap rate at the factory was killing them. (due to balance issues-once the u joints were staked in, it was permanent., and re-work was too costly) So much for a cost savings idea. I heard this from a worker at the factory that made the d shafts. I've spent about 600$ to get a complete custom made shaft (2 piece) for mine. Realize also, if your midship brg goes out, on 2 piece dshafts, its non servicable also. Another real smart idea..... 05 scab 145". 975/373/4.6, soon to be 410's... late 04 build. ....paul
