Beautiful truck, but...

Classic Trucks Mag made a major mistake. It's not a 351W as they said.

Now peeps are gonna think 351W's came in these trucks...they did not.

No 351W's till 1981.

^ I see you have a 351w, was it a 302 truck originally? I'm in the same situation, but if I can't get this 351 running I'm going to have to swap in a 302 HO that my garage just pulled from a stang... I really hope the 351 just fires up one day (i try daily )

The PO swapped in the 351w which I was really excited about, but it sat for 12 years. I got it turning over but after a few tries, it locked up. Found a built 302 so i'm swapping that in and i'll keep that untill i'm done fixing the body and interior.

Once i'm done, i'm planning on doing something with it, just havnt decided if I want to rebuild the 351 or stroke a 460. I like the small block because I wont be pulling much with it. I would LOVE a stroked 460, but the extra front end weight and considering I wont ever use it's full potential for anything more than burning full ^^ lol

No 302's with 4WD until 1980 (except 1968/77 Bronco's).

1959/89 F Series truck 4WD engine choices:

1959/64: 223 I-6 / 262 I-6 (1961/64) / 292 2V.

1965/67: 240 I-6 / 300 I-6 / 352 2V.

1968/76: 240 I-6 (1968/74) / 300 I-6 / 360 2V.

1977/79: 300 I-6 / 351M 2V / 400 2V.

1980/82: 300 I-6 / 302 2V / 351M 2V / 351W 2V (1981/82) / 400 2V.

1983/89: 300 I-6 / 302 2V / 351W / 460 4V = F350 only 1983/84 / F250/350 1985/89.

No F100 4WD's after 1976.
--------------------------
1978/79 Bronco: 351M 2V / 400 2V / 1980/89, same as F150.

so that's why you're debating between building the 351w or getting a 460 because the truck was originally a big block? Weird that the PO would go through all the trouble of changing the trans and mounts and everything instead of finding a 360/390/400/429/460

I think Bell housing is the only thing that had to be changed to swap in a small block.
