i decided today was a good day to replace thermostat just to see... BIG MISTAKE.i started at 330 and finished at 945. I put the water hose in the radiator cap and let it run, and run, and run. it took about 45 minutes for the water to turn clear. it was a nasty red looking color. i did inspect for the check ball, it is there, but spent another half an hour cleaning it out of rust just to make it work again, it was rusted shut. the thermostat was one that should have been on one of my gassers, correct one inplace now, after 2 trys. first run, i didnt set it all straight, and after getting it all back togather, several cuss fits and a thrown wrench or 3, i had a waterfall from the thermostat housing. second run all went well except for my carpul tunnel acting up. let it run for anout 25 mins then took it for a 10-12 mile drive. after 2-3 miles it reached about 150 after 6-7 it reached 95C, which i am surprised to see is 203. it held there for the remainder of the drive and for 10 or so minutes of idle time. This was at 60 outside, tomorrow it should be low 80, so i guess it will get a good test then.....
Next stop, NEW A/C!!!!! Just say no to Texas summers and a 3 - 70 a/c system
That is right about what mine does no matter the outside temp pulling a load it will sometimes get to 210 and the fan comes on it goes right back to 195 or so this is on a mechanical guage.
mines a mech also, i am haveing an easier time reading the celsius side while driving. it is takeing it about 10 miles or so to get to that them though.
That is probably about right. I pulled a 5vr in nevada id. or. and wa. last summer with mine and there were some pretty good grades and mountain passes last summer in the hottest time of the year and then in december pulled a HEAVY and tall enclosed trailer from nm. to anchorage ak. on any of the grades that it reached 205 to 210 my fan would kick on. After I got to ak and unhooked the trailer the outside temps were at times down to 20 below unloaded it would barely reach 150 and would drop to 125 idling so I installed a new thermostat and now it will idle and run at 190 to 200 all day even without a winterfront at 30 below.

If your guage is right you need a new thermostat. It is not good for your motor to be running that cool.
I just recently started running a company truck (small company) my first trip with 25 below weather the motor would not run over 125 up to 150 on big pulls not good for the motor and you don't get very complete fuel burn (not to mention the heater doesn.t keep up). When I came back and told them they installed new thermostats now don't need the winterfront as long as I'm loaded and running and the motor stays at 195 except on bad hills and then I sometimes have to turn the fan on. (heater works great too)

hows is it bad for my motor? and my heater seems to work fine for me, and my temp gauge is an almost brand new sunpro gauge.
Since you are relying on engine heat for combustion, higher engine heat makes for a more complete burn of the fuel injected.
Lower engine temps will leave unburnt fuel in the cylinder, which over time will make it's way into the crankcase.
Lots of short trips where the engine does not run at 195 degrees for long is one of the conditions that is considered severe operating conditions, oil changes at 3000 miles max.
