gap between wheel and column?

Hey guys,
Just put the original steering wheel on my 73 highboy and there is a half inch gap between the wheel and the top of the column. Seem to be a lot of spring tension also. Does anyone have an exploded view of the firewall area where the steering shaft goes through the firewall?
And how do you adjust this out? It looks like there is some king of clamp up by the fire wall that is rubbing a big washer??

thanks again ya'll
Joel

How are your cab mounts? Sometimes if the cab mounts sag, it puts pressure on the column which can manifest itself in different ways. It might cause a column to wheel separation as you describe or it can pound the bushing at the bottom of the column out and cause high steering effort by the shaft binding . You can usually tell if the mounts are sagging just by looking at the truck. If gap at the front of the door is wider at the bottom than at the top, you may have saggy mounts.

Cab mounts are good. I think bubba has repaired the lower part of the column too. So I don't know what it's suppose to look like. Is there bearing at the lower end of the column?

It might depend on whether it's a column shift or not. All the ones I've had apart were column shift autos and they didn't have a bearing in the lower end-(outside the cab)-, just a sort of a plastic bushing and a tube within a a tube -(shift tube)-seems to be the only support there. There are actual ball bearings in the upper column inside the shift collar part of the assembly. And I'm going on memory here because none of my books have a decent picture of the details.

Hmm, I would like to see another highboy but, there are not any close by. Looks like someone has welded a metal piece on the bottom next to the fire wall, to keep it from flopping around.
Are to floor shift model F100 and F250 columns the same?

I believe the floor shift columns are the same between f100 and f250 but not between 2wd and 4wd. The 2wd ones have a rag joint at the bottom and the 4wds have a u-joint fot the intermediate shaft. Also they may be different if they have tilt or criuse( if they had those in '73)
