My engine finally let loose on me in my 74' f100. Broke a piston and busted out the cylinder. Ive got a chance to get another 302 from an 80' thunderbird. The only problem is they want to keep the timing cover, heads and intake/carb. What im wanting to know is what is the difference between the two engines? If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it.
Don't think there are any major differences. Your parts should work on thae newer block. I have a 74 top end on an 85 lower. I think in 84? they changed to a 25oz balance instead of the 50oz on the older ones.
i figured internally they would be pretty much the same. I'm short on cash so i just wanted to drop it in for the time being. The timing chain cover for the 74 has the dipstick in the cover. The 80 doesnt. Would that be the only difference?
That should be the only difference. The early blocks where 28oz and in 81 or 82 they went to the 50oz motors. Might want to check the flywheels out as far as the number of teeth on them. If you have to us your flywheel then you will need to use your balancer to.
Well i have the engine together now. I used the 80 short block. I put the 74 heads, intake, timing cover, oil pan, harmonic balancer and flywheel. I had to cut the dipstick tube off the block to put on the oil pan. Other than that everything fit. Having a little trouble getting it in but with using a comealong thats to be expected. Whats the best way to line up the torque converter bolts? Had it in but had the bolts in the wrong hole on the flywheel.
