Exclamation Oil Pressure 360

I just put rebuilt heads on a 76 360 and of course replaced the push rods and lifters. I started the truck with no problems ran very smoot, BUT I could tapping. I turned to motor off, checked the oil it was a lil above the full mark. I started it again let run for a min build some pressure (I have lights not guages and the light was on, I'm not sure it works though.) Long story short. coolant got warm oil was still cold. Am I in need of an oil pump and how hard is to change or does it just to run a bit?

Shaft

Pull your distrubeter and look to see if the hex shaft that drives the oilpump is there or if it fell out.

Primer tool

Do you have a reverseable drill and a primer tool. They are only about $15 when I bought mine about 20yrs ago. Also if you had the heads off did you put the rocker stands in the right place. One bolt on each side if different for the oiling. If thats it its a easy fix.

I do have a drill but not a primer tool. I didnt know you could put the stands in the wrong place. I put them in just like I took them out.

Bolts

Your right the stands will only go one way. Check your bolts the one with the tapper should go in the second one back on the drivers side and third one back on the P side. You will see the oil hole off to the side with the bolt out.

OHHHH **** I bet those are wrong. But would that cause my oil not to flow?

Dis

If your dist is out check the gear and pin. Usually only a problem on the 351M and 400's.

Bolts?

That will restrict oil flow to your heads. Let us know if this is it.

I have never messed with the bottom of an engine before this my first time going this far. 9thats what she said) (sorry had to do that). I have never messed with an oil pump and know little about the plumbing. I did make sure I out the head gaskets on right for the water.

Check your rocker assembly bolts. If done incorrectly they can cause valvetrain noise.....like a click. Sometimes it can be exhaust gaskets that make the click. Get yourself a good mechanical oil pressure gauge. Then post what pressure you are getting. On a FE the general rule is 10 psi for every 1000 RPM if I remember correctly. My engine is newly rebuilt and I get 60 psi cold at idle and 20 psi warm at idle. You can change a oil pump with the engine in the truck. But get a gauge first and post your results.

Ok I fixed the bolts the are in the right places. I put a drill on the oil pump and can hear the oil starting to circulate. I have the valve covers off to let it run and did't see any oil coming out around the heads. How can be sure the dist is in right? and what else could be going on

You won't see alot of oil coming out around the heads like on a small block. You need to get a mechanical oil pressure gauge and hook it up to get a accurate reading. You DON"T want to run the engine if your not getting pressure and you don't know what kind of pressure your getting until you get a gauge.

I bought one today but its electric. I tried to put it in and need a adaptor for thier sending unit. I did finally see oil coming up after running the drill for about 30-45 seconds. Now I have to change the oil. I got coolant in it while the covers where off. (It's long story I would rather forget). So maybe tomorrow morning since I dont have to go in till later.

I think you should take back the electric unit and get a mechanical. It is far more accurate. The electric one is no more accurate than the factory one in your dash. It attaches to the top of the oil filter adapter with a couple fittings. Just be careful to route the line away from moving parts.
