Multi-viscosity oil DOES NOT THICKEN when hot. It resists thinning. Your X weight (insert first number here ) will never thicken to become XX (insert second number here ).
A 5W-20 weight oil is a 5W base stock that will resist thinning as much as a 20 weight would at 100°C. Think of it as a percentage. Not that it thins 20% but more if a 20 weight oil thins "X amount" at 100°C then the 5-weight base stock will only thin as much as well.
Only gravy thickens when hot.
Barebones, the difference you noticed between the two oils is due to the molecular makeup. The dino's molecules are not uniform hence the thickening. Synthetic oil have molecules that are all uniform and do not "bunch up" like that.
I think stumpalump has the general idea, but just didn't use the correct term. The term viscosity improving agent should be used instead of thickening agents.
5w-20 -- like you said, it is refined to SAE 5 weight viscosity range. Then it is blended with a viscosity improving (VI) -that is the correct term- additive that should make it read in the SAE 20 weight range when at the higher 100 degree C (210 degree F) temperature.
I always use 5w30 Mobil 1 synthetic oil in my modular motor fords.
I have never had anything but great results from Mobil ! oil.
It also gives me a little extra protection on a scorching hot summer day, pulling a 9,500 pound trailer up a mountain pass.
I pull a trailer thru the Rockys so I bet thats best.
Hey... Some engines can benifit from a larger filter. Is there a larger filter that screws onto these engines? Mines a white 02 E-350 Van. My buddys call it the ice cream truck.
Here's a page that discusses viscosity. About 3/4 down the page is a really good chart that shows the relative viscosity of different oils. Interesting to note that 50w. engine oil is the same viscosity as 90w. gear oil. Your 20w. engine oil is roughly 75-85w. gear oil. Doesn't seem quite so thin now.
