I have a couple questions about tig welding, and I'm hoping someone can help me out.
1.) Is it better to tig weld or mig weld body sheet metal?
2.) Can a TIG warp the sheetmetal if you aren't careful?
3.) Anyone know what a used Miller Maxstar 150 TIG welder with remote foot pedal might be worth? The boss asked me to make him an offer, but I don't have any idea where to start. Thanks in advance for any input.
Kenny
Boy,
Kenny,I dont know how much to offer for that Miller. They are higher than any i have been around. As for the Tungston vs. Wire...The tig is better. The mig is faster!Thats the difference, but tig will welg really thin metal.I seen alium foil welded once with one!
Also i tig's amperage is totally adjustable, the idea is to keep the amps low as possible, the foot pedal.
Mig works good to but is a not as nice.Good enough for me and most.
I have a Lincoln 110v Mig.Love it,it's like a good friend!

Blue, Thank you so much for your input! I really do appreciate your help, and it Sounds like this tig will come in handy for me. Well, you just aren't gonna beleive this part!......I get to work early, and the boss asks me "How does a hundred bucks for the tig sound to you"? I said "great" and I figured that since it was cheap enough, I'd ask how much for the portable spot welder sitting on the floor next to it? He replied "I'll make it a package deal". I'm still in shock! I got the tig, foot pedal, Argon regulator, extra wand, extra welding cables, extra tungsten electrodes and ceramic nozzles, 2 boxes of filler rods, and a Miller 110V portable spot welder, all for $100.00!!!! After I paid for it, I found the original books and paperwork that came with it. the original purchase order from Back in '89 says they paid $960.00 for the tig, and 160.00 for the foot control. I see the portable spot welder listed in the Eastwood catalog for $459.00. Needless to say, I'm an extremely happy guy today! Thanks again for the info about migs and tigs. BTW, your truck is really looking good. Take care,
Kenny
I wish i had that luck!I love my mig but like i said the tig has many applications! You can weld aluim, stainless with 100%argon and have professional welds that look like silicone caulking !
Good luck,
Thanks for the good words on my truck, even though i don't remember where i put pics of it !!
The only problem I have with mig & tig welding is the cost of the stinking gas! I went to ask about a "small" bottle for me to use at the house. Close to $100 bucks. I couldn't believe it, so I went with the flux core wire that my licoln came with. Maybe one of these days I'll buy a bottle.
WOW! $100.00 for a small bottle? That's sounds crazy. I was going to pick up a small bottle too. For as much Tiging as I plan to do, I'll have to come up with a better plan.
Kenny
Wait guys!
That hundred dollars is worth it!You cant weld most sheet metal with flux anyway.
I live in Ks and i paid 135 for my bottle.I dont remember how much is in it but it is 2000psi!
That will last the "homebuilder" a year or more!
And it's well worth the investement.I dont have much bread either but i had to have it and has even made me some money with the ATV crowd weldin on the coffin on wheels!
Also you dont have to buy any bottle at most places,I chose to.
You pay a lease of about 4 to 6 dollars around here a month.
I bought!The Argon/Air is only 36 bucks around here for a 4ft tall tank.2000psi.
Dont move on till you check all the sources for gas. Those bottles can last you a long time.I refilled mine in April and it sat on 2000.I have welded a bunch and is on 1100 right now!
Thanks blue, I guess I replied first, and thought second. I was just surprised to see that they were that expensive. I'll check the place we purchased bottles through where I work, as well as a few others. Besides....for what I paid for this unit, how can I complain? If they costed a couple hundred it would still be worth it for me.
Kenny
Kenny,
The first time will be the most expensive, but the refills will not happen often.Plus like i said you can make money with this equi. if you are good.
Lastly,
there is a deposit to pay on the rentals.I will only have to pay roughly 36 dollars from now on assumong my bottle never gets stolen or blows up!
Flux core is basicaly a stick welder with wire feed, way to hot and way to "impure" for welding 22-4ga.

TIG stands for tugesten inert gas A rod of tugesten either pure or thoratetd
(spelling) takes the current to the work peice and as you form a puddle you add filler metal, the current is regulated by means of a remote control foot or hand it is use to produce Pretty looking high quality weld such as one would find on a roll cage or Aliuminim boat parts To weld Aluminium the welder must have high frequency in order to establish the arc,the other advantage is as noted before you can regulate the current very low and control the heat on you work peice so not to warp it
If you are mew to this I would recomend a class at your local community college but at least get a book titled Modern welding
withn MIG metal inert gas the electrode is the consumable filler metal it is very fast and much easier to use and get good with,
if you look at tome as money the mig is the way to go for sheet metal repair
Thanks for the info! I will definately get the book. Taking a course couldn't hurt me either. I've watched the guys at work use this welder from time to time, but They mostly used the mig and the arc welders which I am more familiar with. Once I get the hang of it, I'll practice a lot before I touch the truck with it.
Kenny
Kenny, If you have further questions feel free to e-mail me off the board ,, If you choose to take a class I would try to speak with the instructor and tell him/her what you want to learn, In my case the school did noy offer the TIG class at night , so the teacher had me take a basic gas and arc class first then in the next session he taught me the tig machine while others ere doing gas and arc welding
I have both tig and mig, for the mig welder I have been using C02 I tried the two side by side and there is a little more splatter but he co2 is in liquid form in the bottle an will probably go 10 to 12 time the life of Argon. The bottles are availble at garage sales a swap meet from old beer keg pressure devices. Tig is clean, neat and can weld most types of metals and combonations good luck Ed ke6bnl
