hi, ive got a 97 f250hd 5.8l and everything is pretty much stock. i would like to make it sound better for cheap. im looking for it to sound like a 67 camaro would sound, nice deep rumbling where it almost vibrates ya know? just not to loud. i also dont want to spend a fortune, under 100 bucks would be awesome. also the exhaust pipes exit behind the tire if that matters. thanks! -Tyler
I have the same engine and have a Flowmaster on there, either the 30 or 40 series, but not the 50 series. I like the noise but sounds like you will want the 30 series. If that doesn't get you what you need, just about the only other thing you can do is modify the catalytic converters. Either removing them (which is illegal) or you can get less restricted ones.
what is cheaper to do? i am looking around on the internet and im finding 30 series for about 130 bucks or so, sound right? i cant find any on ebay, but i have found a few 40 series on ebay and they are quite cheap, 70 bucks or less. i found one, its a flowmaster super 44 performance muffler. ring any bells or does it sound alright? thanks for the input
The Super 44 has a nice, deep sound. The cats on these trucks pose a major problem when trying to get them to sound like you want. My truck has full exhaust from headers all the way to the tailpipe. I have a high-flow cat and a FloPro V7, it sounds good but there is not much volume. I will be removing the cat this spring. The high-flow cat did not make any more noise than the stock one, it was a real disappointment.
I don't think your $100 budget will get you very far. $130 for a Flowmaster 30 series sounds right, I think I paid $120 for mine.
You may be able to find some cheaper ones out there but I don't know what their names are. I would think you get what you pay for. Flowmaster has a good name.
alright, thanks for the input, i will look around for a 30 series. also, when i'm looking at this super 44, the dimensions are different. im seeing that its considerably shorter in length than my stock one also the inlet and outlet dimensions seem different, the super 44 has 3" in and 2.5"out i went out and roughly measured my current one, it looks like it has a 2.5 in and 2 out sound right or wrong?
each model of muffler should have several inlet and outlet sizes to fit just about any application. Try looking at the flowmaster web site for more info, you may find another model on the site that will get you what you want.
alright, thanks for the help, i just found a super 44 at the flowmaster website, with a 2.5"in and 2.25" out for 87 bucks. will i have to extend the exhaust pipe at all or anything?
Just cut everything off behind the cat and run a straight pipe, that will produce a bit more rumble. If it's not enough for you then you have to first gut or replace the cats and then pick a muffler. I have tried a Super44 and 50 series and they're both too loud for my tastes, but the rest of my exhaust isn't stock either.
I run the super 44s but on duel exhaust with no cats off long tubes..Just a single might be to loud...There better on true duels...But if you want that rumble you have to have a good cam & h pipe...Lew
I have no exhaust after the cats on my Lightning and its still quiet. The cats really quiet it down. Check out Flowsound mufflers. They are Flowmaster 10 series single chamber knockoffs. They are on ebay for $40. I bought 2 of them for my 86 and they look just like the flowmasters. Havent put them on yet though. From soundclips they sound just like Flowmaster too.
