I like Dupli-Color paint in cans... it sprays on easy with a nice finish. I would use it for the underneath stuff including the rad support, but I really wouldn't use cans on the outside of the truck. You'll spend at least $100 on cans for the clip and it won't turn out very well (been there, done that!). I would consider having it blasted, then shot with epoxy primer until you can afford the final finish.
Krylon has always made me happy for doing these kinds of jobs. A semi-gloss is what you want for the black under the hood. The glossy paint I don't think looks right and it shows more flaws.
All three mention paints are good; if you got access to air; I recommend buying a cheap harbor freight spray gun and use the Dupli-color pre mix, its a easy to use set up.
I painted the innner fender on my current project with rustelom out of a quart can with the cheap harbor freight gun. I'm no painter but it covers well and seems to bond well.
If you wanted even better paint you could spray PPG DP90LF which is a two part epoxy primer that doesn't use isocyanates like acrylic urethanes. A lot of people I know use this for their Cougar and Mustang engine compartments because it is tough, it seals out moisture and is almost the right satin black finish. Not to mention it will last far longer than anything else. Most can paint is acrylic lacquers while some are enamels. If I were using can paint it would be the new Rustoleum Professional, which only comes gloss black (boo), or Eastwood where I have used black Rust Encapsulator and then the Extreme Satin Epoxy on top.
On my recent support and inner aprons I did use several coats of DP90LF after cleaning down to bare metal and then washing with the PPG Metal Conditioner.
I am using Dupont Imron 3.5 sg (43P) semi gloss polyurethane enamel on my frame and other parts, it is a two part system, cost around 120 for the kit and is tough as nails!
also using Dupont epoxy primer/sealer on all raw metal
turns out that i tryed sandblasting it myself. needless to say it was more exspensive then getting someone to do it. so once those pieces are out from the blasters, im having them taken to Northside Fords paint shop. they said they would shoot the top visible serface of the parts with an etch, primer, then my color. (Gloss Black). i know i know it will reviel flaws but they really dont have many flaws. so depending on the price there i might have them do a clear coat too. then after that im haveing all the pieces run to Line X and they said they would line the inside of them with either thier bed liner (in my opinion its too thick to bolt inner fenders to fenders) or thier undercoating (Preferred). so i should have some pretty nice pieces when im done. also the clip is off so i can repair some oil leaks then seal her up. Planning on replacing the cab because of rust and painting the bed later. so it should look ike a frankinstien half new half old truck when im done. lol. thanks for the input guys. Woohoo for tax returns!!!
