A friend of mine has a '97 F150 4.6/4R70W. The transmission is slipping so I'm looking for a used replacement( I'm designated mechanic, which means I do work for free! almost). I did some searching on this forum and couldn't find conclusive advice on what year donnor truck/transmission I can look for. I have a lead on a '96 4R70W that was mated to a 5litre. Will it work?
I've also read that the wiring harness changed after '97 so I should be looking for 97 and older right? Are there any other differences I should be aware of? As an example when I did my own E4OD I had to ensure I got one that the replacement could take a speedo cable speed sensor in the tail shaft.
Any help or a push in the right direction would be great.
thanks Mark, I was told the AODE/4R70W had removal bell housings which I thought was odd.
Do you know what year trucks would be a direct swap? Wreckers have it as '97 only. Which again is odd since this transmission is available in other years behind a 4,6.
I had a chance to test drive the truck this morning. It drove great , plenty of power, shifted smoothly both up and down,.....until 10 minutes later, it warmed up then nothing, it was like being in neutral. I shut the truck off waited 5 minutes, started it up again and made it a hundred yards down the road before I couldn't go any more. Did this to get home, checked the fluid and it was brown and burnt! Any chance this may be a Torque converter issue only? I've never had a transmission fail like this, operating fine when cold then nothing not even reverse.
