Hey everyone I have been trying to find a transmission for my 1992 Bronco Eddie Bauer edition. The numbers on the transmission are:
314-4
F2TZ7000
R155247
Can anyone tell me if this is a AOD or a E40D. And if so what or where are the cheapest places to find one. Thanks for your time and hopefully responses.
its more then likely an E4OD. the AOD stopped being used in 89-90.
If there is an Overdrive button at the end of the gear shift then its for sure the E4OD. you have a few options. you can try a wrecking yard for a low mileage unit or have a local shop rebuild what you have. for a rebuild expect to pay $1800-2400. if you can pull the tranny and deliver it to the shop it might save you some coin but unsure how much.
Be sure to ask around to find a shop that knows ford tranny's especially this unit. they might be a bit more spendy but worth it in the long run. stay clear of the chain tranny shops, it will be a guarenteed piece of crap.
but before we go this route, what makes you think you need a new tranny? give us some explanation and perhaps we can save you some $$$
well for starters it started to slip. I changed oil and checked what i could, it seemed fine. The first nice day of spring i spent about 4 hours cleaning and washing it. Took the top off to enjoy a nice ride around town, when i found out i had no gears. Its locked into 2nd gear and wont come out. Of course it had to happen on a nice day after hours of cleaning, and it has been siting ever since. Thanks for the reply and after 2 years of looking at it sitting in the garage due to financial problems i hope to have it on the road again before to long.
My Son's 94' did the same only it only had reverse. Found one in a yard for 550.00 and was lucky. I put a filter in it and fresh fluid and it's still goin' strong. Gotta' tell ya' though. It's a real bear to change off a creeper. You'll need the rocker panels at least 3' to 4' off the ground to get the clearance to get it out and back in. Don't try it without a tranny jack...........Good Luck!
thanks, and trust me i wont be tackling this project alone, nothing a case of beer and a few friends cant handle, hopefully wont have trouble with clearance i have a 6" lift with 36" mickey thompsons so hopefully that will put it up high enough i shouldnt have to jack it up, im planing on renting a tranny jack from advanced auto parts or a place like that? any ideas how much that might set me back? I found a guy to rebuild my tranny with all new solenoids and torque converter and the whole nine yards for $900 with a 1 year unlimited mile warranty. Ill hopefully post some picks of the beast and the process to maybe help someone else down the road because i hear this is a common problem in these year broncos. Thanks again for the responses and ill keep updating.
When I did mine I purchased an adapter for my floor jack from Northern tool. It didn't fit quite right so I temporarily welded it to my floor jack for this the cut it free. It saves an incredible amount of time by stabilizing the transmission so you can work safely. Josh, 1 case ain't gonna' cut it.....
Hey jcee, I was thinking of buying one of those adapters. Is it worth it? Or should I just weld something up. I was thinking of just welding some tubes on an old floor jack cup. I could make it about a foot square.
Well, it got the job done but it took some fabricating to get it to work for my application. They provide a bolt and washer to secure it to the floor jack but the way mine was set up I couldn't get the bolt in so I welded it to the cradle. Also, both tabs holding the adjustment rod broke off under load so I couldn't adjust the tilt front to rear and I had to reweld them. It takes time to set up on an E4OD and hook up the safety chain but yea, I guess it worked. For a single use I got what I paid for.
Joshg, you havent said if you have an OD button on the end of your gear shifter or a button on the dash. or what motor you have
if your running 36" tires and the gears are stock that is your first issue. the tranny is working double duty and even after a rebuild wont last because of this. we need more info please. I also would be a bit conserned about a rebuild on an E4OD costing less then a $1000. but i know people are hurting also for money so for your sake i hope its a good deal.
It does have an OD button on the shift lever. I have a 302 5.oL v8 36" 15x15 mickey thompson baja belted tires on beadlock rims, not sure about the gears im going to have it checked. Im going to put my link to supermotors on here later with many pics.
and jcee, anymore than 1 case i don't know if i want anyone, let alone me, in an arms reach of a wrench or the garage for that matter....too much precious time and money has gone into this thing....now when tis project is done it might be a keg kind of an event.....
you should be running at least 4.88 gears with those size tires. Is this a street only bronco? you realize those tires being so wide are putting major strain on the front/rear diffs.
If it is "locked" in 2nd gear, you might better check the MLPS just to be sure. They can cause shifting/gear problems because they have problems. Also, when it is locked, does it run rough and have fault light on? It may be something has put it in "limp home" mode which locks the tranny. You may have already checked these things, but if not, do it before spending lots of $$ on a used tranny. What a kick in the --- to put in another tranny with the same problem.
Now dont throw a BS flag but I removed/replaced the E4OD on my 93 5.8 EB, replaced the torque converter and rear main seal----without a tranny jack, sitting on 32X11:50's and by myself, and did not get under the tranny to lift (even if I could handle the weight). Obviously I did some "Oak Tree engineering"
also forgot to mention with that size tire i bet the PSOM hasnt been reprogramed with the proper tire size. this will affect shift points and premature failure because the tranny is working much harder then necessary
Hey Benshere....I been rackin' my pea sized brain and the only way I could see doin' a E4OD in/out by yourself is by puttin a cherrypicker in the side door and using a floor jack.
Even that way is a lot of crawlin' around for you!
