So, the weather stripping on my truck is bad... again. I do a lot of freeway driving and it keeps going flat and letting wind in. I know weather stripping is not typically a part people look to upgrade on their trucks, but does anyone know of some higher quality stuff that keeps its shape and holds air out well?
Sorry, don't know where to get Super Weatherstripping just the replacement stuff. LMC truck dot com, about $40 a door
Loose door hinges are the main reason for the weather stripping going bad before it's time. If you have any slop in the hinges you should start there. Adjust the striker plate too.
I've had some success with a quick repair of bending the top of the door inward. Roll the window all the way down, place a chunk of wood near the striker plate, place your knee down low and push the top. You might need to bounce on it.
Long term fix: I've shimmed the existing molding by slitting the door seal about half way between the top and bottom on both sides. Fish a wire from one slit to the other, tie a piece of 3/16 to 1/4 diameter rubber or anything that will compress, lube it up and drag it through. Cut off the excess and seal the slits with some rubber glue or silicone.
The best repair I have seen is to completely remove the seal. Do this on a hot day in the sun.
Get a piece of tygon tubing long enough and small enough to fit inside the seal.
You may have to fish a string or wire thru it first. But I would lube up the tygon tubing and push it all the way thru the seal.
Cut off any excess.
Replace the seal.
Voila' alot better seal.
Woo-Hoo!!! I just found this thread so I decided to try some of the tips. I had already replaced the door hinges but it still wasnt right. I just adjusted the striker plates and bent the top of the frame in. All I can say is WOW. No more daylight, at 70 no air noise, I'm so happy, I can use my cell phone on the interstate again! I feel like I'm in my old 04'
Thanks
