99 f350 135K today it was about 60 degrees outside and my truck took about 15 cranks to start which is not usual. It just started doing this 2 days ago. i did all new gp's last year and i dont know where to start some help please!!
Did this happen the first time you started it in the morning? If it were me I would start first with the GPR (glow plug relay) it is on top of the motor second one back from the fuel bowl (looks kinda like the back of a starter solinoid). Hopefully someone will be along shortly with pictures.
To test it get your test light and you will see two large studs and two small studs. With key off take your test light and make sure it works get yourself a good ground and test one large terminal and you will have constant power on one post but not on the other post.
Turn your key to the on position perferably if you have a buddy do it for you while you put your test light on the other large terminal and you should have power on both studs at this time.
If you do not have power there then your gpr is bad a very common problem with these trucks. You can do a search on GPR led mod and it will tell you how to do it after you replace this one. I hope this makes sense hopefully one of the guru's will be along shortly but I believe this is your problem or at least a place to start to rule things out. Hope this helps.
Lamce thanks alot for the input and the gpr tested good i have a stancore gpr that i just put on it last year. i really dont think it is a gp issue cause they are new and i can hear it kick on when i put the key in. also it was a really cold winter this year in chicago and i think i only plugged in once and had no issues
Check all electrical going from GPR to GP's. Sounds electrical related, as if GP's wernt even working. If they were working the slighest the truck would have started earlier.
If you cant find any electrical issues with the GP system then -
Fueling issue possibly? How bad (if at all) did it smoke upon start up? blue /black? Did it smoke while trying to start? Answer these and we can getcha some help
Let me expand. I have started my truck when temps were in the 20s with the GPs disabled. This was just a test. It started, but it was not pretty and smoked and romped for a bit. This did not require near the cranking you described.
How does the truck start the rest of the day? Maybe the HPOP is leaking down. Before you start it in the morning remove the plug on the top of the HPOP and see where the level is. If it is low refill and try to start it.
I would also test the batteries, make sure you have 10.5v while cranking. That is what is needed to fire the injectors, but the oil needs to be full in the HPOP also. I would also open the water in fuel valve on the fuel bowl, then turn the key to the on position to make sure the fuel pump is pumping fuel. Make sure you have a bucket under there or you will have fuel all over the place.
