O.K, I have been reading alot about a 6637 air filter. How hard are they to install on a 1999 7.3?I will also say that on a scale of 1-10,I am a 1 on fixing things and have very little tools. Is this something I should forget about doing?
If you have a large flat-tip screwdriver or a small ratchet and socket set, or even a small wrench (something like 5/16", I believe), then this install is about a 1 on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the msot difficult.
You should be able to do this very easily, especially with all the help we can offer in here.
You're best overall deal would probably be from Clay with Riffraff Diesel Performance is building kits which include the connection pipe that is typically more necessary on the early 99's. He's one of the site sponsors, and his link is here.... Riffraff Diesel Performance Parts
I believe the NAPA number is 46637. You can get them at any place that sells truck parts for big trucks. NAPA sells them . I believe you can get them on line from some folks. There is a website that some folks on here get them through, but I don't remember who they are. Someone will post up here soon with it.
I'm a slow typer! If what you say is true, Clay has found a nitch that nobody else has! Congrats to him on that. That will make it a piece of cake to change over!
I bought mine from Fleet Filter- cheaper than Napa by a long shot. Order at least 2 to save on shipping costs. Do you know if you have the stock early bird intake, or has it been upgraded to the late style? Most were upgraded but some weren't... that will decide if you just need a straight piece of 4" or if you need a 45*bent piece.
This is an early 1999 (June 98).I only have 29,000 miles on it.If only driving this 2,000 miles a year is it worth it? I use it in the summer to pull my 5th wheel RV.

You still need to check and see if the intake has been updated. Yes it is definitely worth it, the stock air box is notorious for leaking which causes dusting of the turbo and engine, which means an expensive repair bill.
The early 99 intake says "Powerstroke Intercooled Turbo Diesel" or something to that effect on the airbox lid. The late style intake doesn't say anything. That's probably the easiest way to tell.
The truck is put away until May,but what I can remember I think is the early model. This truck was made in June of 1998. Thanks to everyone for your help, and the good pictures.
