Alternative bed floor materials

Ok, being a cheap SOB, and a bit of a make-it-work-who-cares-how-it-looks mechanic, I am looking for options in repairing/replacing the floor of the bed in my 67 styleside. It is all rusted out along the seams and is about to seperate completely. I have found the replacement panels from JC Whitney, etc, but they are not exactly cheap. This is a work truck only, so I'm not concerned with maintaining originality. Has anyone tried using steel roof panels cut to size? They seem to have the right characteristics: corrosion resistant, weldable, corrugated. Any downsides?

Thanks for the thoughts

Stu,
All i can tell you is what i did myself.I had a rusted floor in a 78 and replaced the rusted corragate with a 4x8 sheet of 12ga smooth. It lasted about 5 years but was still there, just beat up alittle,Also, the four corner bolts were all that held the bed on,it was pretty bad.
As for your idea i think if you foud the panels in a heavy enough ga. it would work.

Stu,
the only problem I could see with that (I looked into roof panels before) is that the corrugation is deeper in the roof panel than in the original floor. Those roof panels come in pretty heavy ga. metal so unless you got alum. panels it should work. John

If originality doesn't matter, why not a wood rack body? Replacing deteriorated body panels becomes a trip to the lumber yard.

I bought a sheet of the same gauge metal from a metal shop. I cut it in half and trimed to fit both sides of the floor. Cost about $15.00. It looks good and after I install the carpet the repairs will not be seen. The hardest part was cutting out the old rusted metal.

Stu

I'm kinda cheap too. (Must go with the name )

I didn't like the JCWhitney price either so I went to the metal yard and got a sheet of checker plate (I can't remember the thickness). A 4x8 sheet fit perfect between the wheel wells and from front to back in my LWB fleet side.
