Hey there im brand new to the site and i have to say it looks great. I purchased a 57 ranchero last year, its a mild custom, lowered, shaved emblems, etc... The motor however is the original 292 and and the only upgrade is a 4 barrel carter carb that was put on by the owner before otherwise the motor is stock. My project is to spice up this motor a bit nothin too crazy but would like to bring it up to around 300- 350 horse power. I wouldnt mind some advice on what to do to clean it up and make her runnin the way she should, and then also some parts, or ideas to give it some extra juice. Thanks very much
Be sure to search this web site, especially this forum, for similar questions. Also, check out y-blocksforever.com/ and search the various forums there.
If your engine is original it has the best cam, rockers, heads, and now, intake and carb that the factory produced. The distributor is also a favorite although you can perform upgrades like the Duraspark conversion or a standard Pertronix II conversion. The Duraspark is considered more robust.
Depending on your level of mechanical experience, you might want to look into a complete rebuild. There are a lot of little things that make a big difference.
By the way, you've got a really, really nice ride. I'd love to get a 57 Ranchero.
Be sure to learn about, and use, ZDDP. Do a search. The quick advice is buy and use STP Oil Treatment for four cylinder engines (red bottle) in your oil.
Thanks guys that hot rod y block in a box sounds like dream haha, But I am just curious to how much power that will bring me, does anybody know or could give me a rough estimate of how much HP that kit will add to a mainly stock 292 y block? Thanks again for all the help when spring comes around to saskatchewan Canada il post some pictures of the ranchero haha if that day ever comes in these parts.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'hotrod in a box', but if it's Mummert's stroker kit, that's a sure way to make more power; 338 cubic inches.
The tried-and-true ways to hotrod a 292 include;
get a 312 crank and have the mains ground to fit a 292 block,
bore the block .080 or .110 and use .030 or .060 312 pistons,
port the cylinder heads, install 2.02 intake valves,
zero-deck the block,
Isky E4 cam and valve springs,
degree the cam.
You should already have the high ratio (1.54:1) rockers, but you can get them rebuilt and have the ratio increased to 1.6.
That's about 325 cubic inches and maybe 250 horsepower?
Use the ECZ-B intake and a 390 cfm Holley carb, or the Edelbrock 1403/1404 carb.
Edit; for extra credit, balance the rotating assembly and get the crank indexed.

Paul, you may be a little conservative. It sounds like 300 to me, but either way the Ranchero will move very well.
It it hasnt been done yet, confirm that the engine is a 292 or 312. Either displacement in a 57 block will have a block ID of ECZ. Without pulling the oil pan to examine main caps, you can look at the crank flange from underneath car using a good flashlight and John Mummert's site for reference.
Once you start chasing the HP genie it can get expensive fast, and there is nothing wrong at all with a more modest but still impressive engine.
Yeah Mike, I was thinking 300, but these numbers can get inflated fast.
The 'secret' to making power is to sweat the details. I understand that people want to know what parts to use, but it's more than parts, it's knowing how to put them together. I know that Mike has been sweating even the tiniest of details; valve train geometry, deck clearance, cam timing, all the things that make the difference between good and great.

I just try to do the best I can, with the limited experience available, and lots of advice obtained over the years from here and y's forever. We will see if it is all blow and no go fairly soon. Set in the engine and tranny yesterday, still awaiting Mummert's release of the new intake. Expect the cam breakin in 4 weeks.
Most guys look forward to how much HP they may get. Since the engine was built for max. low end torque and MPG, I would be REAL happy if 26 mpg was the figure. The guess on HP with a 2V is 215, and a 4V 250. Will be using the 2V carb.
It is an Isky E-4, 260 duration advertised, something like .424 gross lift. With the 1.43 rockers it will be .396 gross lift. I figure the smaller lifters will also reduce duration a few degrees, so pretty close to the '57 specs.
