Here we go again with the never ending cold start problem. I recently replaced the glow plugs on my 1994 f-350 7.3 turbo. They worked for about 3 days then stopped working and the truck would not start. I thought if I replaced the glow plug controller it would fix the problem. I just finished doing that and now not only does it not start, but the wait to start light does not light up anymore. I used bosch and motorcraft glow plus on the first repair. The truck has a manual glow plug switch that turns the WTS light on, but now nothing happens. I am getting frustrated,I have spent 200.00 on parts. Any ideas? Thanks in abvance.
Any chance you missed a wire or have any in the wrong place?
Do you have power at the battery terminal?
When the key is on, do you have power at the ignition terminal?
Is the ground wire under one of the mounting bolts?
When you say manual switch, are you supplying a ground to the white wire terminal of the relay with the manual switch?
Find the engine harness to chassis harness connector near the dip stick.
This is the connector (circled in red) on an 86, but you have one like it on yours in the same location.
The orange wires on the bottom are the glow plug circuit, they should be yellow on yours.
Can you unplug it?
Does it look like it has been hot on the end with the two large wires?
I checked the wires and one thing was different. I have glow plug wires hooked up where the white wire is. This is the was the truck has always been. the white wire was secured from contacting the relay by the past owner. I also checked the current with the key on and did not appear to get any. Could the relay be bad off the battery? Did i fry this thing by not putting the white wire on? Also the WTS light just flicks on momentarily when the key is turned on. I dont see a drop in the voltage gauge when I turn on the plugs. im lost.
The white wire is the ground that the controller applies to the relay to make it close.
So if he had the white wire on the glow plug terminal, the controller is probably fried.
Glow plugs hooked to the white wire terminal, that was a 200 amp load on both the ignition circuit and trying to get 200 amps through the relay coil.
My guess is you have a fried fusible link somewhere in the engine harness.
Do you have power in the cab when the key is on?
Next check for power on the fuel shut off solenoid when the key is on.
If you have no power at the FSS, you probably blew the fusible link over on the passenger side inner fender.
Not sure exactly where it is on the 94 model trucks though.
On my 86 it is right before the harness connector inside the taped up harness.
I have power in the cab and the truck starts with starting fluid. I am getting tired of working on this thing today,so i will check out the fuse situation on monday. Thanks for the help Dave.
