Might be totally off the wall and not relevant to our SDs... but my '94 Explorer had those symptoms years ago and it was the front axle u-joints causing the problem. I have Warn hubs on it and even though they were unlocked, it still acted that way... hard steering and clunking when turning the wheels sharply, moving or not.
my buddy works at atsco.Power steering rebuild company. He drove the truck and got me a new unit.Mine got stuck when turning hard right then wouldnt turn back left without jerking the wheel.New gear solved that. How does your steering stabilizer look? I pulled mine off when diagnosing the prob.

Way Back When(tm), I had to replace the ball joints on my old Chevy. Found the same problem, and realized that the installers had not bothered to grease the new joints. A few shots with a grease gun and all was well.
