Mig welder brands??

Looking to buy a mig welder this week and am nearly sold on the Hobart 135 Handler for $513 at a local welding supply shop. A couple of questions, though:
1) How well can brands such as Schmacher, Century, Chicago Electric, etc be expected to hold up compared to the Hobarts and Lincolns for the amatuer/ hobbyist?
2) The Hobart I'm looking at only has 4 heat settings compared to the Weld Pak 100 (and even some of the cheaper brands)which has a reostat type heat control...how important will that (the reostat) be when doing body work??
Thanks.

Mig welder brands??

The hobart is a good welder for do it your self kind of stuff and even some large stuff. Read the owners manual and it will tell you the duty cycle of the welder, this basically tells you how long you can weld and how much time to not weld. For example it you have a 50% duty cycle then you can say weld for five minutes and let the welder sit for five minutes. Don't over do the duty cycle just check the owners manual because most welders are different. Not all of them have a 50% duty cycle!!!
On most hobarts I have seen a chart on the door that has recomendations for the heat settings and the wire feed speed. The easiest way to do is to set the welder to hobarts recommended setting and practice on a similar piece of metal that you will be welding on, that way you don't ruin your project and you can tweak the settings how ever you please.
When welding patch panels do only a small section at a time and let it cool that way it will limit the warpage in the area. Hobart is a good welder with a pretty good price, I think that hobart is a subsidary of miller or something like that.
