I had to change the starter on the 4.9 beater today, dumpster needs to go in driveway. Any way I got a good rebuilt starter from a generator shop and didn't realize the auto and 5 speed are different. So I put it in, all went well, top bolt is a pita but manageable. Went to start it and screeched away. Looked more careful and saw the noses are different. Advantage to good shop, went back, they swapped the nose in 5 minutes, I put it back in and works great!!!!
Just wanted to share also for whoever needs to do this two bolts are different size. Ground bolt is half inch, top bolt is nine sixteenths.
yep, I have an 89 with the 5 speed, po had engine swapped at one time and put in a 92. Bought a mustang pmgr starter off of ebay because they were more plentiful and was finding them at better prices then one for a mt, and swapped the nose piece from my manual on the starter and put it in. Now the 89 is my parts truck and have a 93 with an automatic. Pieced together parts from the few starters I now have, and swapped the nose piece a few times to keep the starter working and avoiding having to buy a pricey rebuilt one. Can testify the only thing different between the mt and automatic starters is the nose piece. I have had a little bit of trouble with the pmgr starters in these trucks over the years, from just clicking to the it just spinning away.
I don't know how much different the 4.9 is, but the 302 a starter change is a piece of cake. Good thing, cause last time I was doing it outside in 30 below windchill, in the dark laying on snow, because my garage was filled. I actually broke down and bought a rebuilt one that time, and the hardest thing was splicing the igniton wire, because the rebuilt starters solenoid didn't have the spade terminal.
ks17, 4.9 isn't too bad, the top bolt is tucked back up and behind some exhaust pipes, so is you use a 3/8 ratchet and like a 1 ft extension and a uni joint you can get it up on the 9/16 bolt and back it out. Only trouble I see is if that bolt is frozen in there, it's gonna' take some doin' Glad I went to a gen shop and not Autozone, got a better starter for less and they swapped the nose in 5 min. Cheers!
