I just finished rebuilding my carburetor on my 1955 223 I-6, and from my research it is supposed to be a Holley 1904 Bronze type color. So I used Duplicolor Dark Bronze Mist and finished taping off and painting the carb. I must say it looks freaking awesome and I will post pics soon.
Anyway, I just finished sandblasting my aircleaner / filter housing and its associated parts and I am ready to paint them now. So what color should the air cleaner be painted? I assume it is Black or Ford Blue, but I don't know for sure. Any advice would be great.
Also, where do I get a good air filter for this air cleaner? The stock one that has been in it has an inner and outer ring of chicken wire with some type of metal gauze filtering material inside. Any advice on where to get the correct air filter for this truck? Thanks.
That's the stock oil bath air cleaner; there should be a line on the lower half that indicates the level to which you fill it with oil. Personally, while you've got it cleaned and apart, I'd figure out how to convert to a paper filter element inside the stock housing, then paint it black. Several people on here have done the conversion.
That sounds like a good option, but I would hate to throw an orange Fram air filter in there b/c that would look goofy. I will do a search and try to find the threads that have that conversion on here somewhere, unless somebody can post the link for conversion?
However, my air cleaner doesn't look like this one, and isn't a sealed unit like this one appears to be. I will take pictures of mine shortly, and post it so you can it. Give me a minute.
Ok, I just went to look at my air cleaner again, and the filter part is the original oil bath filter screen set up, but the oil bath bowl is not there on top or on bottom. There is just the lower part of it and it appears to be the stock piece. So as it sits, it is certainly an open air filter system, so I guess I just need to find a newer paper filter that will fit this.
I guess the PO removed the oil bath and installed a different ford open air cleaner bottom. It looks like an OEM piece though.
Here are two pictures of it still mounted to the engine before I removed it. Can you guys tell if this is a stock piece? What you are seeing around the air cleaner, is the actual oil filtering element. Any ideas?
I always called that term ''JERRY RIGGED'' cooty bob sounds perverted.....haha
I have a 223 six and it has a little chrome air cleaner. LOOKS GOOFY.....I will try to locate the original. I had a 56 before with the 223 and it had the same air cleaner as what you have. NICE!! I like em stock!!!
Bill........anyone want a chrome little air cleaner....haha
Bill
Wow, I'm shocked, I looked for a pic in the manual, and it does show something like what you've got, starting in '55 or so... That's about 1/2 the size of a BonusBuilt aircleaner. It's a poor pic or I'd post it.
Parts catalog shows two different sized air cleaners for 1952/56 OHV I-6's.
7RT-9600-B .. Oil Bath Air Cleaner / 9.06" O.D. / 3.75" high / 2 13/16" nominal diameter carb mounting flange / Used without brace.
7RT-9600-B was replaced by C1TZ-9600-B in 1961, so the same basic air cleaner was used thru 1964.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ B6T-9600-A .. Oil WETTED Air Cleaner / "Customer Option" / 7.00" O.D. / 3.25" high / Other specs as above.
This same air cleaner was also an option on 1952/59 passenger cars.
There were no dry type paper element air cleaners used thru 1956 on cars/trucks with OHV I-6's.
So what you are saying is that I have a fully customized air cleaner and I didn't even know it. How cool is that?
The lower half that you can see in my picture is an OEM Ford part, and it seems that it is part of the original oil bath air cleaner, just not sure what part?
I ain't having much luck. I just got back from Pep Boys and went through every single air filter they had, and none of them were even close to being this small of a filter. I just looked up Fram, Purolator, K&N, but none of their sites will allow to search by size, which doesn't surprise me.
