I have a 04 ford 5.4 70,000 miles has a knock coming from pass side of motor. Its not in the bottom end i hear it under the valve cover. The knock is all the time at idle even when the motor is hot. Any ideas what it could be?
OH, ok. Then I would check the exhaust manifold studs for broken ones. This will cause an exhaust leak that sounds like a ticking noise. I would also check the spark plugs to be sure none are loose. Your 04 should have the updated heads with more threads, but I would check anyway if there is no sign of an exhaust leak.
well i had my friend check it tonight he works for ford. He said it sounds like piston slap. No noise from bottom end noise comes from under intake on passenger side. So i guess the way it sounds that it is a common problem. He said hes heard alot worse. Just can't figure out why sometimes the noise is louder than other times.
next monday i'm changing all the lifters on that side. see if that works. i still can't believe its a piston. i could if the sound would stay the same loudness but it don't.
I am haveing a similar problem I just bought a 99 F250 with a Triton 5.4. When I first test drove it I thought it was an exaust leak but now can hear it is more than that. When you first start it up it is pretty loud for a few seconds then quiets down, when you rev it up or drive down the road and mash on it and the rpms come up it is loud again.
I pulled my boat today for the first time with it and the noise was there almost the whole time when trying to excellorate. I heard a different lower pitched noise when the motor was in that inbetween fase of not pulling or decellorating. Anybody have any Ideas?
Well everything looked fine in the motor. Did find a loose sparkplug though and it was in the area of the noise. Changed the plug thank god it didn't ruin the threads. But noise is still there. Been told its carbon built up on piston and valves in that cyl because plug was loose and drawing cold air in and 02 sensors makeing the cyl rich. Still comes and goes at idle and alitte bit above so i guess i'll just run it for awhile and see if it goes away. Funny i don't remember all these noises in the motor when i was running motorcraft oil in it i think i need to go back to it.
