high pitched squeal

i tried a search but got a few thousand answers. i have a 93 f-150 302, e4od, 4x4. it's not a constant squeal but its gettin more common all the time. it seems to be comin from one of the front accesories on the front of the engine, power steerin smog alternator or ac. i think its a bearin on one of them but hoped somebody has already ben down this road. i really think its the smog pump, if it is can i get a belt shorter to bypass it? if so do anyone no the part number. any help would be apppreciated. thank you bodidly

First off you will have to identify the problem. Take the belt off and turn each accessory pulley by hand until you find the one that is tight or rough.

Spray some teflon lubricant or other spray lub in the back of the tension pully, that may do it for a while. But it does sound like some bearing is goin' south and you'll need to find it.

Try putting a good belt on it like a Goodyear Gatorback or a Motorcraft, if it still squeals, start testing the pulleys one by one with the belt off..............Never use belt dressing.

Yes, I've been down that road, and all these guys suggestions are good ones. I first thought my belt was slipping so I put a new one on and it seemed to go away for awhile, then it came back. I narrowed it down to the tensioner pulley and replaced it. That took care of it for about 1000 miles then it came back. Now its the idler pulley, and hopefully I can get that replaced in the next couple of days.

So your squeal could be the belt is going bad, or maybe an idler going bad or both. I've heard the idler and tensioner pulleys on these trucks like to go south faster than accessories do, so check them first.

An easy but potentially dangerous way to check is to get a long screwdriver and put the handle to your ear with other end on the bolt holding the pulley on and listening to it. If the squeal gets louder then you've probably found your problem.

Hope this helps.
