weird tapping noise...need help

i have an 82 f100 with a 302 and auto 3 spd tranny and on the way to wally world last night i was on the interstate running about 60-65 and there was a really wierd tapping sound that sounded like it was coming from under the dash or on the firewall by the center hump. i could feel it with my feet in the floor. i turned off everything, radio, wipers, heat, and it was still thumping. it kinda sounded like there was a flap opening and closing real fast and hard. when i let off the gas it would stop then back to cruising speed it would start again i could speed up and it would stop than back to cruising speed and there it was again. it only does it at about 60 mph and unless i have someone cramed under the hood while driving i cant see where it coming from. if anyone has had this happen or has an idea where it is comeing form please let me know i dont want to mess anything up and this is my daily driver. thanks
nick

I would check for an exhaust leak. They don't always sound like one. The description you provide sounds alot like one though. Depending on its location in the pipe work you will get different sounds at differing throttle positions. Just a place to start . Once your under the rig you may find the source of the sound more apparent.
I don't see your location in your signature, but at first start in the morning you may see steam escaping from a loose joint in the system that would lead you to a leak. Being that this just started, you may or may not be able to see a carbon trail indication.
Loose converter nuts have been known to make such sounds, but unless your transmission has been changed recently its unlikely your issue.
Check for loose bolts and connection points while under the rig. A loose or worn set of motor mounts, trans mount, and any other drive-train related fasteners could contribute to sound generation. Good hunting.

You might want to check your speedo cable while your down there. They can make odd sounds too, especially when they are getting dry.
