I was informed by my employer that I have the option to be there local driver but I need a Haz-Mat certification for my Class C license, is this hard to get? Its been about 4 years since i've taken the Haz-Mat certification for my Class A permit. Any simlarities? Thanks for your input. Oh ya I live in California.
I would think it would be the same hazmat test no matter what class the license is. Grab the latest book from the local DMV and study. The questions aren't to hard. They do a back ground check, and I believe fingerprint now. Runs about $150. They have really jacked up the prices to maintain a chauffeur's license.
I don't know about Cali, but when I was looking at getting a CDL in Oregon, Hazmat was just another endorsement on the license. Getting the endorsements was just a matter of taking the test.
I googled "CDL Practice Tests" and got a whole slew of free ones, did the practice tests a few times and then went and took the test at the DMV. The questions on the DMV test were identical to the practice tests. I think I missed one answer out of 8 tests.
Hazmat rules have changed, you will have to go to your DMV that is authorized to handle hazmat (Iowa you can renew your lic at any county courthouse, but you can ONLY renew or get a hazmat at 9 locations state wide) you will have to take the test, prove your citizenship, go to a authorized fingerprint collecter (I had to go to the DCI for the state) and get fingerprinted that is sent off, pay the money for that and wait 2-8wks for the TSA then take that paper back to the DMV and then you can get your hazmat.
After reading the CA site a little it looks like you can not get hazmat on a regular drivers lic like a class C, you MUST have a commercial drivers lic from what I can tell but I would call the DMV and get clarification on that. That was just my interpretation of it.
You'll need to get fingerprinted by TSA, cost $86.50 and they only do it at certain locations, days and times, so you may have to drive 100 miles to the nearest locarion to get it done. You'll get a threat assesment letter back in about two weeks, pass the DMV written exam and present them with that letter to get the hazmat endorsement. TSA requires you refingerprint every five years so they can get another $86.50 out of you. TSA also requires that you make an appointment for the location and pay in advance or bring a money order, no charge cards, personnal checks or cash allowed.
When I had a CDL I had to add the haz mat and just went and took the written test and it was easy. You got to understand that in most states if not all THE DMV DOESNT WANT YOU TO FAIL IT. THEY DONT WANT TO TURN ANYONE AWAY...and I mean ANYONE.you compreday dat? Their answer code was very very easy to get and DMV knew it. I even saw several "NON americans" holding the code in open veiw and memorizing it minutes before they took the test...what a joke...My state NC was the one that gave the 9/11 folks their licence you know. screwed up I wish all drivers licences were very hard to get. It would keep people honest and people like me with nothing to hide and a brain wouldnt be affected.
Ship boy the rules have seriously changed after 9/11. real the link above the feds got very seriously involved with it.
I think it's stupid as heck since they won't bother even getting a class A CDL if they decide to use a truck as a bomb but hey....
