Need Help..86 Bronco

Hey guys, I need some help with this one. Receently purchased an 86 Bronco 5.0EFI, Auto 4X4.

I got all the leaks repaired and ready for smog, but I have a stalling problem. After start up I let it run for a few minutes to warm up. Sometimes it will stall, just sitting there, and won't researt right away. Let it sit for 10-20 minutes and it will start right up.

Drive for for a while and sometimes runs just fine, other times it will keep stalling. Then I have to kinda limp it home. Let it sit for awhile and starts right up.

I changed the fuel filter, no help. If I turn on the key I can hear the fuel pump running.

I am at a loss, any help would be apperciated!!

Thanks

Kevin

Pull codes... the onboard computer should tell you something about where the problem lies.

I've got the same rig. Mine was the TFI module. Mother Ford thought it was a great idea to mount it on the distributor. It would heat soak and shut down. Cool off and fire right up. When it was hot, the codes were all over the place. Once cooled, it'd be code free. I keep a couple of them in the tool box. And the special toll to replace it in there as well.

Thanks for the quick replies.

How do I pull the codes? I have never had to pull codes before and I am not sure how to do it.

Is it difficult to replace the TFI on the distributor? I was looking in the manual and it seems a bit involved.

Thanks again for the help. I knew this was the place to go!!

It's a knurled wheel 8mm thin wall tool. You can find it in the help section. It's used for all Fords with the TFI module.

Pulling codes will save you from buying a $75 TFI module if that's NOT the problem. Check out this LINK for about as much info as you could possibly ever need about pulling and deciphering codes.

For a little more specific info try this link.
I've been there and if you've never pulled codes before it can be quite a job. Any extra info would make your job just that much easier.

Thanks for all the help guys!

I read over pulling and reading the codes and I didn't quite get it, so I just replace the ICM.

I tried finding a code reader to help me get the codes eaiser, but all I could find were the readers for 96 and up. I called my son (UTI grad) and he agreed that the ICM was most likely the problem. He said they fail alot as well.

I got a new ICM for $40.00 dollars, pulled the distributor and replaced it. Reinstalled and now everything seems to be running great.

Thanks again for all the help.
