The stock muffler is that big I'm shure it would be hard to tell the difference. With the big stock muffler, a huge cat and lots of tubing I can see why you wouldn't notice a sound difference with the new Y. But I'm willing to bet some flutter is there.

I first reported no flutter when I put the ebay Y on my dads truck but after I rode in it a few times I heard flutter. Only reason it was hard to hear was because of the loud exhaust he had. His truck has a lignting style exhaust with a FM50 SUV sido and a univ catco cat. The Y shure made it louder between 2k-3k rpm and actually made it sound better. Hes tired of it now so I'm putting on a Force II FM catback with the FM70 on it for him. I'll probably wrap the Y with header wrap to help cut down on the flutter.

Well I have the FM 40 w/dual outlets one pipe to each side of the truck after the tires. 4" tips. Sounded great before the y pipe. Now its totally different and sounds like a v6. SO I'm kinda at a loss of what to do.

Flutter doesn't worry me - my '74 highboy had it big time with the FE 390 in it - long-tube headers, no X/H-pipe, and of course, the FE doesn't fire bank-to-bank evenly, it fires two cylinders in the same bank. At the right RPMs, it would "flutter".

There is a resonance in my exhaust right now, at the point where Monsta's shows up in his video he posted a while back. It's probably been there all it's life, but it's so minimal compared to my 390, I never noticed it.

It's a "resonance"

Just from drivin it for awhile i can take a good guess what the problem is. The muffler is holding it back, Im guessing just by listening, causing it to have a higher pitch. Something more free flowing or whatever will probably correct it..... hopefully.

More free flowing then a Flowmaster 40 series? That will be hard to find. Flowmaster makes a chamber muffler where other mufflers place packing material such as fiberglass and steel wool in them. Maybe your CAT is almost full? Unless you do a glass pack or a racing muffler like the 'Ultra Flow' muffler it will be hard to find a muffler that flows more then Flowmaster. Maybe try Borla?

You could search on the internet and find flow rates for most popular mufflers. It isn't too hard to find a muffler that will outflow a flowmaster 40.

One problem with any chambered muffler is that they are not as adaptable to different systems as straight thru mufflers. Their design is more complex and their performance is more sensitive to engine output/setup.

The FM40 isn't the most free flowing muffler on the market as the matter of fact chambered mufflers in general are some of the most restrictive. Flowmasters and other chambered mufflers tend to help produce more lower rpm torque than a straight through muffler. I used to have a Dynomax Ultra Flo on my V10 and that thing flowed well over 1000 cfm. After the headers were put on my truck was V6 ricer city with that muffler on. I went to a FM70 exiting in the stock location now the truck sounds good. You need a muffler with more capacity, preferably a chambered muffler. Regardless in my experience flow isn't your problem its capacity. (Case size)

When it comes to maximizing exhaust performance, the most important thing that one needs to consider is velocity. Maximize velocity and everything else will take care of itself.

i dont have headers, i have factory muffler...and the exhaust flutter drives me CRAZY. I'm looking at installing the ebay y-pipe. One concern that i have is that i have heard the 6.8 might lose low end torque? have any of you that have done this mod, had this problem?

ebay ypipe didn't hurt my low-end-torque, if anything it improved it. Or, to be more accurate, made it available with less go-pedal.
