Question Belt shredding

I just changed by air pump because it was seized up and now after driving for 3 days the serp belt is starting to shred on the radiator side. The new belt is wider than the old one, could that be the issue?

Apparently it's running over the edge of one of the grooved pulleys, thus it's cutting itself.

I would agree. Check the tensioner pulley for wear.

The grooves in the belt need to fit into the grooves in the pulleys. maybe you don't have the right belt. The new belt shouldn't be wider than the old one. Compare them side-by-side and the grooves should be the same.

I just had a new tensioner and power steering pump pulley put on and the issue is still happening. WTF??? Should I try to find a smaller belt (4 groove vs 6 groove)?

Why is the new belt wider than the old one, it should be the same?

Beats me. The old one was a bit more narrow compared to this one. I will have to look when I get home but I think it was a 4 groove and never had a problem until the air pump seized.

Make sure you go back and get the exact belt for your motor.
Did you put the right size pullers back on?

When you say "wider", do you mean thicker? Thicker is OK, but wider is probably not.

Are you sure you ran the belt correctly over all the pulleys?

Dude, this should not be an issue. Put your original belt back on and see if it runs fine. If so then you have the wrong belt.

Allignment

I had the same problem of the belt riding off of the alternator and harmonic balancer by 1/4 inch and shredding on my 95 5.8 when I bought it.

After 3 belts and destroying the trans cooling lines the mechanist at the auto store I go to diagnosed it for me.

Someone had replaced the powering steering pump and dident drive the pulley all the way on flush with the shaft.

Check to see if all of the pulleys align up.

The air pump pulley may not be in alignment

Excellent suggestion. I had a buddy whose rig had an alternator mount bolt fall out and his alternator was slightly out of alignment.

I had the exact same problem on my truck ('88 4.9 5spd). When I replaced the power steering pump, the pulley was slightly out of alignment and the belt would sort of "shimmy" from side to side as it rode over the pulley. It would shred belts like a fiend (one every three weeks roughly). End result was the pulley had to be pulled forward maybe an 1/8" or less and the problem was solved.

When you bought the new air pump, did it come with a pulley already on it or did you have to transfer your pulley over to the new pump?
