ok so my stock filter box is cracked like everyone else's im sure, i got a 99 f 250, and and 02 and they are both cracked, been like that since i bought them. everyone says fix it asap, that it sucks so much air it is real bad, so i am going to. what would be the best thing to do, and the cheapest? go with a airaid or something, the stock box is around 200 i think, who wants stock though!
Run a search for 6637. Thats what most of the guys and gals here use. They modify their system slightly (get rid of that stupid airbox) and use large semi-truck sized paper filters that are cheap and easy to replace.
I am still using the aftermarket oiled Airraid that was on my truck when I bought it because I haven't had any problems with it.
The one downside of the AFE and other such aftermarket systems and they are expensive..and you have two to buy.
ok, thanks for the advice, where is the best place to buy this setup?
Most people built their own. Get the 6637 filter from NAPA or another filter supplier. A 4-4 1/2" clamp and short piece of 4" exhaust tubing, or the equivalent, is needed to make the connection to the filter. Remove the air cleaner box to make room for the filter and install. I'm sure someone can provide pics and more info.
EDIT: A little slow on my response. I type too slow and my thinking matches.
cool, so get the filter from napa, some 4 inch exhaust tubing and some 4 to 5 inch hose clamps. do i need to buy a filter cover, outwears thing. is this all i need, cause if it is, i am fixing to go get it. hey, thanks guys!
I just did the 6637 and ordered my filter from Fleetfilter.com. I bought two and figure they will last me a couple of years as I don't put on a bunch of miles and most driving is on paved roads. I used a piece of 3 1/2" long 4" diameter exhaust pipe that I got for free from a muffler shop. and also bought the large 4-5" diameter hose clamp. I pulled my old air box.(needed to pull the battery out to do it) and cut the air box part off of the battery/air box assembly with a jig saw. Then replaced the remains of the battery box and installed the filter. It just lays in the old location and is pretty snug in there. As others have noted I zip tied the intake temp sensor to the brake line in that area. The whole job took about and hour because I need to cut the piece of 4" exhaust pipe to length because the piece I got was too long.
