Speedometer does not always work...
My speedo does not always work in cold weather. Well, So Cal cold which is 45 to 55 degrees. It will usually stay on '0' and once in a while it will read way to fast of a speed. After about 20 to 30 minutes it starts working properly again.
Is this the VSS or should I check something else?

Cable is freezing up - BAD CABLE.
Water can get inside and sit there, so guess what happens when it's cold?
Unless its electronic. If it has a sensor at the back of the output housing of the tranny it can also be water intruded, but more likely checking and cleaning the UNDERTRUCK connectors will reveal a problem.
Wires and connectors are always a source of stray trouble.....
The first thing I'd look for is a snapped keeper on the speed sensor. That would allow the plug to get loose and be intermittent. You'll find it on the tailshaft housing, or around the transfer case. Look at all of them, there are at least four connectors under there.
