The wonderful economy has forced me to work on my junk more than want to. My 5.4 blew a plug out of the head a while back. So instead of paying the couple grand it costs to let some other guy fix it, I did it myself.PITA! So after tearing the head off, drilling, tapping and sleeving the head for the spark plug, I reassembled everything. Yes it's back the way it came apart, no extra parts or bolts. The only problem is, It won't run. It WILL start with starting fluid, and once i kept it running with said fluid, But I don't wanna keep doing that. I know that the fuel rail emptied out when I disconnected it and the fuel very likely bled back. How do I get it to prime? Its been sitting for quite a while(almost a year due to be being mobilized for deployment and then being broke). I wouldn't think that would be enough time for the fuel to gum up. Am I wrong?
Stupid question, but is your fuel pump working? Do you have fuel pressure? If it sat for so long maybe it froze/gummed up. I am not sure if the pumps energize with key on or if it has to be running. Also make sure the injectors are plugged in. check to see if a fuel system/pump fuse got popped. I forget whether or not Expies have a fuel shut off switch.
I am deployed right now myself or I would run outside and check myself.
When you turn the ignition key from off to on (not to start) the fuel pump should run for two seconds to pressuize the system. Have someone turn the key from off to on for a few seconds, and repeat a few times while you hold your hand on the fuel tank and listen for the pump to cycle.
lol yeah the tank is in. The relay is good and the fuse is good. The shutoff switch isn't tripped either. BUT, I have cycled the ignition a few times and can't hear the pump. I forgot to mention that earlier. Just never heard of a pump going bad while it wasn't being used. I just pulled the gas cap off and the gas smells bad......looks like its a drain and fill with a new pump....argh!
Yeah pdqford, thanks thats what I was looking for. I know thats how it works with a lot of cars. I just never paid attention to it in mine so i was not sure and it's a REEEEAAAAALLLLY long walk for me to find out.
welp, looks like a new pump is in order. I dropped the tank, pulled the pump/sending unit assembly and turned the key over. Couldn't hear anything, so I held onto the pump itself and turned the key over. It almost felt like it wanted to turn but was bound up,then when the circuit opened back up it clicked. Damn. So it's definitely getting power, which makes me feel much less inept. Just to make sure, I unhooked it and and hardwired it to a 12 volt source and got the same thing. I guess its my money pit to bare. Thanks for all the replies.
Next time you're going on deployment throw some STABIL in there and run it a bit before you go. We used to put it in our patrol boats before we had to pull them for the winter. They were 4 stroke Honda's and they'd start right back up in the spring after sitting for 6 months. It's pricey but not as much as pulling a tank and replacing a pump.
Prior to each of my 'vacations' in Iraq and Afghanistan, I used to use Stabil in a full tank of gas before shutting my older truck (not the Expy) off for longer deployments. Some say that keeping the tank completely full reduces condensation from forming inside the tank, which can rust and lock up the pump. You might want to look at replacing the fuel filter while doing the pump as well.
