Sorry if this subject has been covered, but I did a search on Cold A/C and found no info. Can someone please explain the what, why, when, where, and how for this mod
I was going to install this, and have a fewquestions.
1. the coolant from water pump hose in the engine comes directly off the water pump right?
I think it flows out of the block/head, then to the heater core, then back to the water pump. Been a while since I looked though.
2. it looks like the valve has a flow arrow, does this matter?
Don't know how much it matters, but I put mine in the correct orientation per the directions.
3. there are two sets of vacuum lines under the passenger footwell, do I want the set closest to the passenger, or the one near the firewall?
Depends on the kit and how you want it to work. IIRC, the white line going to the canister is the one I used and it just shuts off the core on Max A/C, which is what I wanted. If you use the red one, it shuts the flow off on vent and regular A/C as well.
4. do I need to worry about heat for the valve, or only the vacuum line melting?
Not sure what you mean. I put mine in per the instructions. The vacuum line is rubber, and you don't want it touching the exhaust manifold for sure. The instructions tell you exaclty how to route it.
My 1979 F150 has a 460 in it and I use to pop heater cores all the time until I change the flow path from the water pump. So I guess my question is that if I install this will it damage my water pump or heater core (i.e. to much back pressure). I have an EX with a V-10 and a F250 PSD that I wanted to install this on. Thanks!
No issues that I'm aware of with bypassing the heater core. My 2000 Ranger did this from the factory. Check your Ex, because it might have one in it already -- I have heard that some do. That in itself tells me that it shouldn't be a problem, and like I said, mine has been installed for about two years now -- no issues.
I have this mod and I used the shutoff valve from a expedition. Got it from the parts store for like $10 I think and had the vacuum line. I teed it into the red line but switched it as soon as it got cold here.
I used a water shut off valve for a 1995 ranger to do the mod and picked up the vac.hose all from NAPA,for around 35$ IIRC.
This is the valve I put in.I just cut the hoses and kept them in lined with each other.
I put the tee into the white line under the glove box and ran the new vac. hose out through a rubber plug in the fire wall in the right front on the pass side above the carpet. You can run the line and keep it off the exhaust with no probs.
The White line closes the valve when you turn to MAX a/c only, shutting off the hot water going to the heater core. This why it cools better because the A/C is not thrying to cool the heater core off and you get all the cool air on a hot day.
EDIT: the short black vac lines on the TEE is because the ford vac line was to small for the TEE.So I used two small pieces of vac line I had to make adapters to make it work.
I too did as Brad except I typically don't buy from NAPA unless I have to and I did not get my valve there. The difference is I tied into the red line so I get cooler air out of the vent (dash) setting because there are plenty of days here that AC is not needed but the cool fresh air is nice. In the winter I pull the line at the "T" and cap it with a plug I keep in the glove box so I can get heated air from the vent setting. I have an electric controlled vacuum switch but have been to lazy to install it.
