hey all, when putting the lifters in my 390 i noticed one would not go down all the way, well it was the cam pushed back too far.so i pushed it towards the front and the lifter fell right in place. the bearing surface on the cam was showing.the timing chain and cover has already been installed.when i put the cam in i installed the plate with the two bolts(pan head shape) on behind the gear, also the c looking spacer was installed, the pin and so forth.when i looked at the line up between the crank and the cam they were in line.my question is should i be worried about how the cam moves back and forth alittle with out the lifters? or does them lifters help hold the cam into place inline with the cam bearings?just wana make shure before i go tearing the cover back off. thanx
desoto dave - If you have installed a new timing set and it has replaced the original timing set with the nylon upper gear then you have to leave out the spacer between the upper timing gear and the end of the camshaft. On the back side of the new timing gear there should be a washer/spacer machined into the gear that replaces the original spacer that was between the gear and camshaft originally. If you don't leave this spacer out you will have SEVERE cam walk and you will destroy the cam and lifters as well as the bearings and maybe even more. It will eventually walk so far and break the thrust plate behind the timing gear and the cam will walk even farther out eventually to the point that the upper timing gear will hit the front cover. The previous owner did a timing gear swap on my truck so, I speak from experience.
By the way...I hope it's nice in NC. I am looking to relocate out there this year.
Yep, I was pi**ed when I found out it wiped the cam out and all the lifters and bearings. Ended up rebuilding the engine with only 68,000 miles on it. But, now I know it is 100% correct.
yall are great.i was wondering about that spacer if it was affecting the gear from properly holding the cam in place.so that explains why the pin that is in the cam gear seemed alittle short, i had to place it in there just right so it would run the fuel pump drive,so when ever you replace the stock timming set toss the c spacer?man when i did my 360 i never did that ,glad i didnt run it long. hey 77 Bronco where in N.C. are you thinking? im using a clevte rv cam and cloyes true roller 3 piece timing set.im glad i asked.i new it seemed kinda funny.
Your pin should be ok once the spacer is left out. I know I've seen shorter and longer pins. I had to replace my cam so I had a new pin to work with. I was thinking just north of Charlotte. I want to stay near the automotive area and the local NPD shop that is located there. I hear people from there are very nice and the weather is far better in the winter. There are only 2 or 3 cam manufacturers. They just put whatever box a certain company wants. Roller was a good choice and is the only one preferred.
