I have a 93 f150 with 220,000 miles... it was running great till a few weeks ago ... when the truck warmed up it went to running really bad, now even at an idle it has a miss in it... i pulled the obd 1 codes this is what i came up with.
Key Off - 111 and 512
Key Run -
116 - engine coolant temp sensor voltage higher or lower then expected
311 - Thermatic Air system problem, no operation during engine run self test (bank 1 )
332 - insufficient EGR flow detected
can anyone please tell me where to start.. so far we have done a complete tune up on the truck and replaced the Map sensor... I have had 3 different mechanics give me 3 different answers... one says the egr valve is bad.. one said the coolant sensor makes it run bad.. and one told me the coil was bad...
Please help i cannot afford to keep taking the beast to mechanics.
I would take a good look at the coolant temp sensor. Your description of the problem, along with the 116 code, and the advice from one of the mechanics, seems like it would be a good indicator that it just might be it.
What happens when you unplug the coolant temp sensor, and pull the engine running codes again? If there are no changes, then I think it (or the wiring to it) would be the problem... I'm no expert, but it seems logical to me.
Thanks man ok next dumb question is ... i was told that truck has to temp sensors.. i know where the one for the guage is where would the other one be....
I would leave the egr til last. or maybe never, mine has been bad since I bought my truck and it doesn't do much but give a code.... guys up here regularly take them off and put a block plate over where it goes.
ok i wasnt gonna fool with the egr valve anymore... i had a buddy today tell me how to pull the vacumn line off and test it... and the egr valve is good... he said on that its more then likely the egr position sensor... unfortunatley i have to get that fixed.. i have emmissions to pass here.. lol

Oftentimes, one code is caused by the other. You should find the coolant temperature sensor, and knock that code out first, I think.
Thanks Beastly.... that would explain it running so rich it will make you cry.... i think the last two tanks of gas i got like 100 miles off both tanks... might explain why the temp gauge stopped working too.

You're welcome. Btw, I believe that the temp gauge runs off the switch by the distributor.
Did you check your coolant level? It seems odd that both of these would fail at the same approximate time.
well i honestly think the temp gauge has been goin out for some time now.. yeaht he coolant level was good in it.. the only thing that had been disconnected was the heated choke crap on it.. but thats all been hooked back up. Its so screwed up that a damn temp sensor would cause that much issue... but then again someone else had told me theirs missed ALL the time and that is what it was but he had a 4.9.

ok heres the deal.. replaced the ECT today... all the codes cleared for the egr and thermatic air... the only thing its throwing now is 172 ( heated exhaust gas oxygen sensor show too lean ( bank 1 ) so now i have fixed one problem and now i have another.... can anyone help me with this.
Do you have an exhaust leak? An exhaust leak at the manifold to head or manifold to pipe can cause a too lean code. Did you check the codes right after replacing the ECT? I wonder if the ECM is trying to bring itself back into spec.s from the bad ECT that it is still calling for a lean condition. The too lean code may clear up itself after a couple of miles of driving.
well i bought this truck used from the old redneck down the road..the only exhaust it had left on it after he got done was the CC and about 4 foot of pipe after it. I know it says its running to lean but boy the fumes coming out will choke ya.
Any exhaust leak before the O2 sensor will cause more oxygen to run past the sensor causing the ECM to think that it is running too lean and try to dump more fuel into the engine to make up for the extra oxygen passing by the sensor.
will check it out tomorrow i know the O2 sensor is before the convertor on my truck... i was told to check the Air Charge Temp sensor too... i pulled it out and it was gunked up and black so i am gonna replace that tomorrow and see what happens with that... thanks for the insight...
Ok checked for exhaust leaks today did not find one.... so checked the fuel pressure it was good... so i have to ask.. on that throttle body somewhere is there a way to adjust that.... i know on older ones there was but not sure about this year modle
