Timing Issue I think

Timing Issue I think
Ok, I have a 87 F-150 that I put a 89 460 EFI motor in. The truck runs great when it's cool. If I drive it around it seems to lose power. I can drive into town and when I go to start it up it cranks hard (like battery dead) or sometimes it will start but seems like it's not picking up enough fuel, just kinda putters. Try to start it 3 or 4 times and it starts. I checked timing with spout connecter out and it's set. I did this before we checked the timing and it was off. Now with is set where it needs to be it's still doing the same thing just not as bad. Seems to me it's not advancing. Like I said it runs really good when I first take it down the road. Then the temp comes up and it doesn't have the same power. Could the distributer be bad or the module on the side of the distributer be bad. What do you all think?

Usually the scanner won't read older fords because there not OBD2. Fuel pressure is good checked that, new pump, filter, injectors, wires, and plugs everything is new, EGR shouldn't be bad, and usually if i remember right they will make it run rich. I still may put the scanner on it should read and tell me about the EGR not working.

You said you checked the timing.. How far was it off...If it was really off that could be a sign of wear ..An easy way to check is take off distributer cap and turn the crank with a wrench and see that it does then turn it back the other way when you turn back see how far you have to turn it to get the rotor to turn....This will tell you how much play you have ...That will tell you if you have a timing chain or distributer gear problem...Lew

The timing chain and gears are new. I used a crappy timing light that my father in law had and thought it was set, my friend used his good snap on light and it was 15 degrees advanced. The only thing i haven't replaced was the distributer. I will try taking the cap off and checking it with the crank, a few people i have talked to says it sounds like distributer. so i don't know. it's abou the only thing i could be

The EGR valve feeds exhaust gasses into the intake manifold, if it does this at the wrong the engine will run bad.
Are you confident you have no exhaust flow restriction?

Buddy of mine had the Snap on solus scanner so can us it for OBD1. It just hard to get anyone to come and scan it because they don' t want to and they say it pointless. I have a guy here at work that has the same scanner and is going to look at it. Maybe the EGR is bad, I don't think i have exhause restriction, I might though, sounds to good. It's just wierd after it gets up to temp is when it acts up. Heck we did a 347 stroker for a mustang and used a EGR block off. Didn't seem to affect it any. and the one i had on my 302 that was in the truck didn't work either. never had this problem, but you could be right, it's worth a shot.
