I have an 05 F250 and while greasing I noticed that the seals which were pressed into the axle tubes (part going into the diff) on the front axle by the u-joints had come out and where just riding around the axle doing nothing. I think these are just to keep the dirt out of the tubes, as the older axles did not have them. Anyway, what worries me more is that the axleshafts seem to have a ton of movement in them. This includes where they go into the wheel hubs themselves. I don't think they should move around that much. I have 55,000 miles on the truck and will be doing the front brakes soon, and if I need to tear into this further, would like to do it at that time. Any ideas if this is normal or not? I think the excess movement is what has knocked the seals out.
You will have to look closely but mine had a LOT of movement in it. So much so the U joints flattened the grease fitting on one of the ball joints. My knuckle seal was gone...completely failed. Replaced and no more play. My needle bearing was fine but you still need to check it when your in there!
I am very familiar with the old style D44 and D60 but not these new hub bearings. So the hub bearing assembly has a built in spindle, but the hub bearing assembly has replaceable needle bearings? Is this correct? Those seals on the axleshafts look fine, I think I could just knock them back in right now. If I tear it down that far, I would replace them. I can't believe that those seals are strong enough to actually keep that axleshaft in place though.
