i got an 78 f250 with the 400, has anybody experienced with putting a blower turbo or whatever on one and where have you bought it from, i tried lookin at holley and couldnt find much. please let me know thanks.
A turbo is not an ideal power adder for a big truck. Trucks need to make power at lower rpms and need a lot more torque to move all the weight. Power adders (unless something like nitrous used for racing) I wouldn't do. I would just save money and build a big motor(500 cu. or so). Your turbo likes rpm which is not what a truck is designed for.
While a turbo or centrifugal supercharger is more dependent on rpm's to ramp up power, there are superchargers that are built for boost on the low end. For example, the Kenne Bell twin-screw supercharger is built to be at max boost at 1800 rpm, which if the 400 was built right, would make it happy as hell (if not make it explode at some point). The drawback here is finding a superchager like that, that will fit the 400 intake, or a blower/intake kit that will fit the 400 block...I'm not thinking you'll find that easily.
The 400, having such low stock compression, would probably benefit from a blower, but the sheer cost of adapting one to the 400 would seem cost prohibitive considering you could get the same power increases from a better cam, heads, headers, and pistons (or a 434 stroker kit!...See Tim? I'm helping!).
If, however, you're sold on the idea of a supercharger, look for possible adaptations of the Kenne Bell or the Whipplecharger setups. They'll give boost at the low end, which is what a truck motor likes.
was searching and took some time looked all over thru holley and everywhere and i came across this website, so if yall are looking for a supercharger for the 400 here ya go.
