Found the second USB port!

Ok so i been looking most of the day for the second hidden USB port for the sync system. I know there's 2 USB ports as USB 2 came up in the display a couple of times. Well today i found the second port. If you take the 2 screws from the center surround speaker the whole plastic tray will slide back and below that there is a extra USB port next to the one already being used. The reason i was looking for it was because i have a hard drive and store all my music on that and it sits below the sync port in the little tray. Well i wanted it to be neater and run the extra cable from where ever i found it into the center console strage area. The trucks center console strips down really easy to be able to run your cable from the top of the dash to the stroage area. I will post some pics once i get the cable in and hidden. This is a great mod for anyone who dont like there MP3 player on display.

Awesome! I have a harddrive at home that requires 2 USB ports. I guess one is for power? So this would be great. Let us know if it is fully functional! Do you have the Jukebox?, if not, maybe it is for this which wouldn't help me. Why else would they have an extra??? Can't wait for the pics because I don't see the 2 screws your talking about. If all this works, we'll be forever in your debt!!!

The 2 screws are under the removable pad that sits in the tray. One left and right of the center speaker. When you remove that tray there is a small cable connecter about 0.5"x0.5" with a single black cable going to the plug. Press the top of the plug to release the connector and you will see it's a mini usb plug and next to that is another mini usb socket but the cable that is in the left socket wont fit in the right socket. I guess they are like this so that when 2 cables are added you cant mix them up. You should be able to just put a normal mini usb male cable into that then run the female cable end to where ever you like. I was going to get a second sync plate and fit in inside the center console storage area. That way it would look factory fitted then. But gonna go see the ford dealer and see if they can get the plates and cables as a spare part or not. I would have though so but you never know. You could just run the female end of cable to where ever ya like and not worry about the plate at all. The reason your bar drive has 2 cables is because some older hsrdrives required power from 2 ports because they didnt have enough current to supply the hardrive from one. I have a old one like that here but just fitted a single cable to it and it worked fine.

Can you add some pictures of where you are talking about accessing the second USB. I dont see the center speaker that you are talking about. Do you mean the mat directly below the SYNC LCD screen? Tanks for the help I have wanted this mod for some time. I cant stand the cable running across the cup holders and into the center console.

If your hard drive is a 2.5" notebook sized drive in a pocket case, it will probably work just fine with a single USB port--the 2nd port is for those computers that can't supply the needed 5 watts (which is a USB standard) for startup power...you then use the 2nd USB port to draw some more power from. Usually the power only jack is the one at the very end of the cable.

I've found that you don't need to use the 2nd USB plug in most cases with computers...I'm guessing that Ford's USB jacks have plenty of power available for a small hard drive using a single USB.

I will post some pics up in the next hour. Tried to but stupid cam batt was flat. For now heres a pic of the dash. See the large tray at the very top of the dash well thats the tray you have to remove. The module is uner that tray.

Bsimmer3000 ..... Did u ever get the pics taken on the 2nd USB port location. My nephew has been trying to find his in the f150. Mine has and are located. There doesn't seem to be a lot of excitement on this forum about a 2nd USB port .... Not as much as on the 2011 f250 site. Thanks.

Heh tseekins .... thought I would give it a try .... he had over 1500 posts so thought he might still be active. Also thought a bump might get an answer from someone else. Oh well. Will post as a new thread on the F150 site and hope for a response. TKS.
