I am helping a kid find the right programmer for his 97 f-350. Muff and cat delete is all he has done. Shift on the fly would be nice but not critical.
He tows sometimes heavy but has no gauges, so power and safe together only.
What are your experiences? Any thoughts greatly appreciated

I would suggest Tony Wildman, but his daugther is in the hospital right now so I don't think he's doing much work. Call DPTuner and tell them what you have and what your looking for and they should be able to hook you right up.
Whatever you do stay away from EDGE evolution. With these trucks there is a lot of problems that seem to occur I recently went through 3 of them. They wouldnt properly change settings w/o killing my PCM and I kept having to get them to send me stuff to reflash it. They tryed telling me our computers are the problem, that only ford 7.3's are bad and that if you replace it they work fine. That doesnt make much sense since the replacement would still be the same technology. I'm presently looking at various alternatives as well because of that. Thought you might like to know that.
For now, if he just gets a downloader, If not Edge, what about SC, Bully, Banks? We are not looking for the most right now, not until he can afford other mods. He can always sell the downloader then get the Tony or DP. Like I did.
Thanks ofr the help,
Lusty
I run Superchips, havent had any problems with the tow-safe setting, i like the firmer shifts of that setting, the other two setting not a fan of. As for egt's haven't had them over 1100, but havent towed real heavy yet...
Do you have any other mods? How did the power increase feel in tow safe and tow perf? I am wondering if it was relatively dramatic over stock for the 1997.I run my 2002 in tow perf all the time. Runs alot better than Perf.
He is going to get the EGT and Tranny gauges. I have also talked him into the ATS turbo housing.

Just whats in the sig, too poor for more, lol. There is a differnce noticed but it's not "Oh man she screams now" just more low end torque and better take off at the line. The tow-perf has a different power band but i dont like the way it makes the tranny shift so i stick to tow-safe. I gained about 1-2mpgs with tow-safe( all about how you drive on wether your mpg will go up). I do agree with tim and the rest TW, or DP would be the absolute best options to get, but when your on a budget SC is not so bad.
i can understand being on a budget but that isn't the end all say all here. i went with a bully dog power pup that i picked up on fleabay for 125. it was fun, i ran on the extreme setting all the time, had some tire smoking power, but i kept thinking to myself if this crappy programmer does this than what will a tw chip be like? so i sold the power pup, made some money on it and ordered a tw chip. just waiting for tony to get his life back together so i can put it in and see! thankfully i can wait and am not really in that much of a hurry but i feel very bad for him. i can't imagine all the calls he must be getting right now from people wondering where their stuff is. must be the last thing he needs right now. i was considering a php chip just because they have the quiet setting which would be great in drive throughs but after all i read about tony i'll just wait. no matter what your friend does now, he will eventually upgrade i'm sure. once you start with these silly trucks you just can't stop!
I would at least replace the downpipe before trying to make more power. As for a chip I use a superchips first gen 60 hp chip in my 97 and its been in there for almost 5 years and never been a problem.
If he was convinced to get a ats then surely he could put that money toward better programing. And if you compare new to new a good chip is the same or cheaper to not so good programmer
