My neighbour works as a battery operator and has a 2005 chev half ton extended cab with around 135 kms on it. Last month he took the truck in to get new tires on it, and they told him his front end was ready to fall out of it. $3000.00 later he had a new front end and tires. He was shocked because he bought the truck with around 80,000 kms on it and it just had some front end work done then. That's not the worst, couple weeks ago his transmission went out and that cost him $3800.00 to repair! He took it to the local GM shop and they said "we have the parts in stock and a specialized transmission tech on staff since we do so many"!
Now for the Ford story. My brother also battery operates with his 2004 Heritage F150 extended cab with 130,000 kms on it. After hearing of the Chev having a worn out front end at about the same kms, he took his in for a check and a trans flush. They checked it out and said the front end is still fine, and the fluids looked good when they changed it. He's had this truck since 60,000kms, so the front end is still original.
Ford--oil patch tough!
Good story.
This is like what I heard from a friend that worked at the Wolliston Lake mines. The entire fleet was Ford, the gm`s they first tried did not stand up in those brutal conditions as well.
awesome story. a guy i work with has a '00 chebby that sees nothing but pavement and its on its 3rd set of ball joints/tie rod ends.
my wife's cousin works for a oil company out of strathmore, AB, and a couple of years back they switched to an all Ford fleet for a couple of reasons... 1) the chebbies were costing too much in repairs, 2) the ground clearance on the HD chebbies just suck at stock level. they bought a fleet of PSD's and plan to stick with them. the wife's cousin drives an '04 F350 Lariat PSD, he's put about 130 of the 175k on it and hasn't had a problem with it. its got an intake, turboback exhaust, and edge tuner...
Wow that sucks to be that chevy owner! Right there is one reason I would never buy another brand of truck except a ford. There are lots of other reasons too
Fords have way better front end stuff then the others and way outlasts the competion. Most wheel alignment mechanics will tell you that. Of all the fords I have owned I have yet to replace anything on the front end.
my '96 had 280+ kms on it when i traded it and only had one lower ball joint replaced ever. when i took it to be safetied here in sask, it was marginal, but reccomended to change. i think that was at about 265kms or so. the mechanic wasn't suprised at all. now this was a light truck, fairly well taken care of, but no matter, thats a pile of kms on factory parts!!
Ive had to replace front end parts on ford trucks before, but not after low miles. For some reason though, I thought I read/heard somewhere that in 04 or 05 they had some front end troubles with the super duty for abit...?
Regardless it must not have lasted very long before they solved the problem.
i've done some reading about that front end issue Prep... you're right on the years, and it seems to show more on modified trucks, but regardless, premature wear is premature wear. read of the "death wobble" as guys like to call it. its sort of scary really!!
My uncle also tells a story of when he was in the army stationed in the N.W.T.. He said GM quit giving warranty on transmissions when they blew up. There reason was that the cold was considered an extreme condition, so therefore the trannies where not covered. This was in the late 70s early 80s. He bought a brand new 1980 F250 with a 302 and C-6 then, and he still has it today with over 300,000 kms on it with original drive train. The cold never hurt it at all!
Here's an update on the trucks. The GM just dropped its transfer case last week. Another $2000.00 for that repair. The owner says he now has $10,000 in repairs on the truck in the last couple months. My brothers Ford, well he had an engine light come on and had to change 2 oxygen sensors, but still a far cry from 10 grand!
